Previewing Miami RB commit Chris Wheatley-Humphrey’s senior season: ‘We don’t know his limitations’

Chris Wheatley-Humphrey has been the do-it-all guy for Hollywood (Fla.) South Broward since he arrived, and while the 2024 three-star Miami running back commit was recruited as a ball carrier, his skillset suggests he won’t just be limited to the backfield.

The 5-foot-11.5, 170-pound running back’s junior season stats were nothing short of video-game like: 70 carries for 1,166 yards, nine total touchdowns and 16.7 yards per rush attempt. But as a sophomore, he recorded six interceptions and earned a reputation as a lock-down cornerback, which he demonstrated again at a Miami 7-on-7 tournament this summer by shutting down four-star Florida State commit Lawayne McCoy.

South Broward head coach Charles McCrea plans to play Wheatley-Humphrey to cover the opponent’s top receiver as a defensive back this season, although he may also play the “spur” and “rover” defensive back positions as well.

“I think (recruiting sites) should rank him as ATH,” McCrea said. “Chris’ sophomore year, he shut down pretty much all of the top receivers that we played. Moving around and putting himself in different situations, it helps him better himself as an athlete. … He’s a DB I’d say almost 100%. Some say he’s a running back almost 100%. We don’t know his limitations. We really don’t. I think when he gets to college, coach (Mario) Cristobal has a jack of all trades. He’s got something special. I don’t think Chris even knows where he’s at yet or his ceiling.”

Wheatley-Humphrey’s dedication and discipline helped him stand out from other prospects and helped him become a Power Five recruit coveted by programs like Florida State, Ole Miss and Louisville, but his speed and athleticism elevated him to another level in the South Florida football scene. This fall, McCrea wants to see Wheatley-Humphrey improve his killer instinct and become a more vocal locker room leader after traditionally leading by example.

“Just like some of the other great backs that have come out of Broward county and the state of Florida, (we want to see) that mentality of, ‘I’m completely dominant,’” McCrea said. “From start to finish, that killer instinct, the eye of the tiger, all of that stuff that symbolizes, ‘I’m Chris Wheatley-Humphrey. I’m here to mess stuff up.’ That’s what we want.”

McCrea said Wheatley-Humphrey has been a model athlete on and off the field and his effort encapsulates the values of the team. He’s become hyper-competitive over the most menial things, like racing to the water cooler or lifting the most in the weight room, which McCrea thinks will offer Wheatley-Humphrey a tremendous chance for success at the college level.

CaneSport’s Take

Wheatley-Humphrey has an ideal skillset to play defensive back at the college level if the Hurricanes choose to move him, although he said so far Miami’s staff has only talked to him about playing running back. He would need to add substantial weight during an offseason if the Hurricanes keep him at running back, but he could easily play cornerback at the next level.
