Preston Taumua commitment: What does it mean for Nebraska?
Four-star offensive lineman Preston Taumua from Waipahu (Hawaii) has committed to Nebraska. Taumua announced a final five of Oregon, Nebraska, Alabama, Arizona, and Auburn. The Huskers hosted Taumua for a mid-week official visit on June 19th.
The Huskers are now up to 24 commitments in the 2024 class and Taumua is the fourth offensive lineman in the class. Taummu is the second highest rated commitment in the 2024 class and here are our thoughts on what Preston Taumua’s commitment means to Nebraska and the 2024 recruiting class:
1. Preston Taumua is the first Nebraska commitment from Hawaii since linebacker Wynden Ho’ohuli in the 2021 class. The Huskers started dialing the attention to Hawaii recruits in 2019. Nebraska went from offering zero recruits from Hawaii in 2017 and 2018 to seven recruits in the 2019 class.
2. Taumua is the fourth offensive lineman in the class and the first player that is really projected to play the offensive tackle position. Last year at Aiea High School, Taumua moved between the guard and tackle spots.
3. Nebraska emerges victorious in a serious recruiting battle for Taumua. Taumua took an official visit to Nebraska and officially visited Arizona, Auburn, and Oregon. Taumua also unofficially visited USC earlier in the year during March and was still receiving interest from Alabama.
4. Taumua has an industry ranking of four stars and 90.78. He is the highest-rated offensive lineman to commit to Nebraska since Turner Corcoran in the 2020 class. Corcoran was also a four-star but had a ranking of 95.51. Both were the top-rated player in their state in their senior year.
5. Nebraska is likely not done trying to add another offensive lineman to the class. The Huskers have been pursuing a full complement of offensive linemen – two offensive tackles and three interior offensive linemen – and have their eyes on Grant Brix from Logan (Iowa) Logan-Magnolia to join Taumua as an offensive tackle in the class.
6. Nebraska has hosted 33 official visitors for the 2024 cycle and has 24 commitments. The Huskers have been very efficient in getting commitments from players that officially visit Nebraska. The Huskers have hosted seven offensive line official visitors. Two of those recruits committed to other schools (Caleb Pyfrom and Kaedin Massey), and one remains uncommitted (Grant Brix).
7. There is just so much to like about Taumua’s film and what he does as an offensive tackle. His film against Kapolei High School is great to use to break him down. He is a good athlete, matching up against a smaller, quicker defensive end. He is effective both as a pass blocker and a run blocker. He never stops his feet.
