Predicting OU stat leaders at each position for 2024 season
The 2024 OU football season isn’t that far away.
And Oklahoma will have some new stat leaders in several categories. But with several key players back, they could have repeat leaders in 2024. Here are George Stoia’s predictions for who leads the Sooners statistically in 2024 in passing, rushing, receiving, tackles, sacks and interceptions.
Passing: Jackson Arnold
Who finishes second: Casey Thompson
Why: Arnold is obviously the easiest choice for this entire article. But who finishes second? That’s a bit more difficult. I still think Thompson is going to be the backup. But Michael Hawkins could certainly win that job. I don’t think that would surprise anyone.
Rushing: Gavin Sawchuk
Who finishes second: Taylor Tatum
Why: I’ve made it known I’m a big believer in Sawchuk this season. I think he’s going to rush for 1,000 yards in 2024. But my bold take is that Tatum becomes the No. 2 for OU by season’s end and rushes for around 500 yards. I think he’s their most talented back and will prove it.
Receiving: Deion Burks
Who finishes second: Nic Anderson
Why: I think Burks is going to have a monster year. His speed and physicality will be a great recipe for success in this offense. It wouldn’t surprise me if Anderson ends up the leader in yards and touchdowns, though. And watch out for Jayden Gibson. He’s my sleeper to lead the team in several receiving categories.
Tackles: Danny Stutsman
Who finishes second: Kip Lewis
Why: Stutsman is the obvious choice here. He led the team in tackles the last two seasons and I think he will lead in tackles for loss again this year, too. While that OU linebacker room is deep and he will have to win that job, I think Lewis could have a huge year. He finished second in tackles last year despite not playing much until halfway through the season.
Sacks: R Mason Thomas
Who finishes second: Ethan Downs
Why: This is probably my boldest prediction. I know Thomas didn’t play much last season. But I still think he is their best pass rusher when healthy. It wouldn’t surprise me if he had around 8-10 sacks this season. And Downs will have another solid year. He was their most consistent pass rusher last season.
Interceptions: Billy Bowman
Who finishes second: Peyton Bowen
Why: I don’t know if Bowman will have six interceptions again this season, but I do think he will lead the team again. And I think right behind him will be Bowen, who has some of the best ball skills on the team. I think there will be a lot of rotating at corner for OU and less at safety, giving those guys more opportunities.
