Position Watch: Taking a closer look at the Ole Miss safety room
The countdown towards the 2024 Ole Miss football season is nearly in the single digits and the No. 6 Rebels are putting the finishing touches on preseason camp as it transitions into regular season and game week-mode.
While some teams are breaking the seal on the season this weekend with ‘Week 0’ other teams like Ole Miss are having one final weekend of Fall camp and a scrimmage that will resemble the closest thing to a dress rehearsal inside Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.
With that in mind it is time to continue a closer look position room by position room of this year’s Rebels roster. This was started last week with a dive into the linebackers room and we will stay on the defensive side of the ball by looking at the secondary, starting with the safeties.
Bryan Brown is a first year coach on head coach Lane Kiffin’s staff that is overseeing both the safeties and the defensive backs. I will still separate them here by position, though.
This is not an official depth chart, or even an official guess from anyone other than I on The Ole Miss Spirit Staff. Chuck, Ben and Zach might see things differently. Though here is how I would see the room just in terms of pecking order.
SAFETY
This group is one that looks like it should make sense on paper of who will have the edge to start and who will be in the rotation on the two-deep some next Saturday’s season opener against Furman.
Washington and Saunders are returners with a year of experience under Golding’s Ole Miss defense and thus are the leaders in the room. Canady is also in that category but I have him at the bottom of my rankings due to dealing with an injury and missing some time at the tail end of camp.
Transfers Lawrence and Banks are next as they have been able to get more reps and time on the practice field just by default of not having to deal with injuries. Moore falls into that group with Canady as he has been wearing the black jersey this Fall camp more than he has been wearing the defense’s white jersey.
There are some younger players that might could use the four non-conference games as a chance to earn their keep and more playing time this season. Sophomore Nick Cull is one of those as is true freshman Andy Jaffe.
