The Iowa Baseball team continued their early season onslaught of Big Ten opponents, taking down Minnesota 13-0 in the first game of a doubleheader on Friday afternoon. With the win, the Hawkeyes move to 16-9 and 9-2 in Big Ten play, which keeps them in sole possession of first place in the standings.
Cade Obermueller and Anthony Watts were dialed in on the mound, combining for 16 strikeouts. Obermueller tossed 6.0 scoreless innings, including a career-high 11 strikeouts and threw 67 of his 103 (65.0%) pitches for strikes. In relief, Watts completed 3.0 scoreless innings, tacking an additional five strikeouts to the total.
Offensively, the big blow came in the sixth inning. Leading 3-0, Andy Nelson, making his first start since the Rutgers series, blasted a clutch two-out, three-run home run to break the game open. They added on seven runs on nine hits in the top of the ninth to reach double-digits for the 11th time in their last 16 games.
