PGA Championship sensation Michael Block comes up short in U.S. Open Qualifying

PGA Championship sensation Michael Block comes up short in U.S. Open Qualifying

Less than a few weeks after his memorable performance at the 2023 PGA Championship, Michael Block missed out on qualifying for the U.S. Open on Monday. His 18-year-old son Dylan also missed out on qualifying as well.

Michael Block, who is currently in Canada ahead of this weekend’s RBC Canadian Open, was competing at the U.S. Open qualifier at Lambton Golf & Country Club in Toronto. He finished with the 36-hole qualifier at 5-under-par, which was good for sixth out of 27 players.

However, only the top three players from that qualifier make the U.S. Open. The players to qualify out of Toronto were American Ryan Girard, Swede Vincent Norrman and American Ryan Armour.

Armour came in third place at 7-under, meaning Block was two strokes back of potentially earning a spot in the U.S. Open.

The 2023 U.S. Open will take place two weekends from now on the North Course of Los Angeles Country Club from June 15-June 18.

There were 13 qualifiers held across the world over the last few weeks in preparation for the U.S. Open. Ten of them were held this past Monday.

Dylan Block, who recently graduated from high school, competed at the qualifier at Hillcrest Country Club in Los Angeles, which featured 89 players vying for five spots.

Michael Block was a story of the 2023 PGA Championship

Michael Block was hoping for the opportunity to keep the magic alive at the 2023 U.S. Open after his moment in the sun at the PGA Championship in May.

Block, who is a club pro in Southern California, finished tied-for-15th with a final round hole-in-one during one of the more memorable performances by a club pro in recent history. His hole-in-one was the 29th over the past 40 PGA Championships.

He became only the fifth club pro to ever finish in the top 20 of a PGA Championship — and the first to do so in over three decades.

“I’m as normal as it gets; right?” Block said after his final round at the PGA Championship at Oak Hill Country Club in Pittsford, N.Y. “It’s a thing for me where I’m not trying to be an inspiration. I’m not trying to do anything, and that’s kind of the big deal is I’m not trying to be anybody outside of myself. Hopefully people gravitate toward it and appreciate it and be themselves and succeed in their goals as I have this week.”
