PFF Grades Iowa’s offense vs Penn State

PFF Grades Iowa’s offense vs Penn State

As you might expect, when you play only 34 snaps in an entire game, generate just four first downs, and score zero points, the grades from Pro Football Focus will likely be less than glowing. That’s exactly what happened on Saturday night in Happy Valley as Penn State shut out Iowa, 31-0.

The Hawkeyes were held to only 76 yards of total offense and turned it over four times via fumbles. Iowa only had the ball for 14 minutes and 33 seconds on offense, which isn’t much at all in a sixty minute game.

Let’s take a look at the Pro Football Focus grades for this week based on those 34 snaps.

QUARTERBACK

CADE McNAMARA  – 29.7 overall grade

DEACON HILL – 44.1 overall grade

McNamara’s stats per PFF

Clean Pocket – 3 of 8 for 35 yards

Under Pressure – 2 of 6 for 7 yards

Not Blitzed – 2 of 6 for 7 yards

Blitzed – 3-8 for 35 yards

Play Action – 2 for 4 for 15 yards

No Play Action – 3 of 10 for 27 yards

GRADE THOUGHTS – For the second straight week, McNamara was among the lowest graded players on offense. He has a 34.1 for his passing grade. Hill did not fare much better with a 42.8.

RUNNING BACK

Terrell Washington Jr.  – 60.6 overall grade

Leshon Williams – 60.0 overall grade

Hayden Large – 59.5 overall grade

Kamari Moulton – 49.6 overall grade

GRADE THOUGHTS – If there is a bright spot from the grades this week it’s that all three running backs graded out above 70 in their pass blocking. It’s pretty impressive that two true freshmen playing their second college game are this detail oriented. Iowa only had 17 yards rushing and 1.2 per carry, so not much to report there.

TIGHT END

Erick All – 65.9 overall grade

Addison Ostrenga – 41.7 overall grade

Steven Stillianos – 40.7 overall grade

GRADE THOUGHTS – All was Iowa’s leading receiver with 3 receptions for 35 yards. No other tight end caught a pass in the game. Both Ostrenga and Stillianos graded out at 54.5 in passing routes.

WIDE RECEIVERS

Diante Vines – 60.7 overall grade

Jarrett Buie – 60.0 overall grade

Kaleb Brown – 56.6 overall grade

Seth Anderson – 53.8 overall grade

Nico Ragaini – 53.8 overall grade

GRADE THOUGHTS: Everything was basically at replacement level or slightly below as far as overall grades this week. In this game, Iowa wide receivers caught two passes for 18 yards. That’s it. Hard to win football games and score points with such limited involvement.

OFFENSIVE LINE

Logan Jones – 72.3 overall grade

Rusty Feth – 71.2 overall grade

Beau Stephens – 60.8 overall grade

Gennings Dunker – 58.5 overall grade

Connor Colby – 55.4 overall grade

Nick DeJong – 55.1 overall grade

Mason Richman – 50.3 overall grade

GRADE THOUGHTS – It was not a great day for the Iowa offensive line. Iowa allowed three sacks and six quarterback hurries in the loss to Penn State. Mason Richman had a low score of 4.3 in pass protection. Rusty Feth was at 80.3 in pass protection. Logan Jones was highest graded run blocker at 71.5.
