Penn State zeroes in on portal targets; Donovan Smith signs deal with Super Bowl champs: Newsstand

Penn State news, notes, and updates for May 4 include transfer portal offers plus a new NFL team for Donovan Smith and more.

It’s time to dive into Thursday’s top tweets and headlines about the Nittany Lions and college athletics.

Penn State tweets of the day

We start with the NFL. Former Penn State and Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive tackle Donovan Smith is signing with the Super Bowl champions. According to NFL.com, Smith is signing a one-year deal with the Kansas City Chiefs.

“Donovan Smith has played his entire career at left tackle,” NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero wrote on Twitter. “Jawaan Taylor has played almost exclusively right tackle. If all goes well, that’s how the #Chiefs will line up in front of reigning NFL MVP Patrick Mahomes after Smith agreed to a one-year deal worth up to $9 million.”

A Maryland native, Smith has started all 124 pro games he’s played in since the Bucs picked him in the second round of the 2015 NFL Draft. The NFC South franchise moved on from him this offseason, though, in what has been described as a salary cap move. Now, he’ll suit up in the AFC for the first time.

In other news, Penn State has zeroed in on trying to find a cornerback in the transfer portal. The Nittany Lions solved their need at defensive tackle on Wednesday night by landing former Old Dominion lineman Alonzo Ford. Next on their list is a secondary player to replace the departed Storm Duck.

PSU offered former Mississippi State cornerback Audavion Collins on Wednesday. On Tuesday, they joined the race for Louisiana cornerback Trey Amos a day after offering Division II corner Donovan Callis. Other offers are out, as well.

Quote of the day

“Only couple weeks into evaluation process for 2024 @seniorbowl but best player we’ve seen so far is Penn State LT Olu Fashanu (@olu_fashanu). Biggest thing that stands out is his incredible grip strength, especially for 19-year old.”
