Penn State tackle Garrett Sexton podcast interview

Penn State tackle Garrett Sexton podcast interview

Penn State football gained a big commitment last Sunday when On300 Industry three-star tackle Garrett Sexton committed to the Nittany Lions. Recently, he sat down with Blue White Illustrated to discuss his commitment and how a Wisconsin native landed on Happy Valley as his college destination.

Check out the full interview below. Here are some highlights from the conversation.

Phil Trautwein played a big role in Penn State’s efforts to land Sexton

While the relationship isn’t a long one, Sexton bonded quickly with Penn State offensive line coach Phil Trautwein. He felt comfortable on campus and also when speaking with his future position coach. The fit, he says, was natural.

“Honestly, he’s a really good guy, and I think everyone gets along with him well. Well, people clicked with him. Some coaches can be kind of standoffish when you’re a non-commit guy. I feel like I could approach him and ask him any questions, and he would listen to me,” Sexton said when asked what fans should know about Trautwein.

Some people have even compared the two. Trautwein, who was also an undersized tackle at Sexton’s point in his recruitment, can relate to what the Arrowhead High School senior is going through. However, the Penn State coach’s knowledge and attention to detail in technique were more important to Sexton.

“He played tackle. So think I can relate to him a lot. You know, he’s a little bit younger. I can appreciate that. During our meeting with him, he went through all of their technique and stuff and how they run everything. I would just say I was blown away.”

Tackle over quarterback was an easy decision for Sexton

While most fans know that Sexton started out his high school career as a quarterback, most would assume the transition would be difficult emotionally. Quarterbacks are the center of the offense, but Sexton took to tackle immediately.

“Well, for me, the thing I like about tackle is that you’ve got a major job every play. When you play like a quarterback, Sometimes you get to be handed the ball off. Obviously, you’ll be throwing and getting all the glory. But I like that. I like putting guys in the dirt.

But that initial training at quarterback gave him a better perspective to start his time at tackle and gave him a leg up mentally.

I’m probably the only guy on the field that knew what every single player on the field was doing, every single play. Because at quarterback, I had to know every single run what the running back was doing. And now I know what every lineman’s doing, every play.”

On3 has Sexton as the 115th player in the country and sits just outside the top ten at 13th overall in his position.
