Penn State set to split Beaver Stadium public address announcer role between two familiar voices: Newsstand

Penn State news, notes, and updates for July 18 include the school’s plan to fill the public address announcer role at Beaver Stadium plus headlines of the day and more.

It’s time to dive into Wednesday’s top tweets and headlines about the Nittany Lions and college athletics.

Penn State tweets of the day

We start with an update on the Beaver Stadium public address announcer situation. Back in April, Penn State confirmed that longtime PA voice Dean DeVore was no longer with the athletic department in the role he had held since 2000. On Monday, Statecollege.com was first to report that the university is picking a pair of people to fill DeVore’s role. One is Rodney Martin, who is the public address announcer at Pegula Ice Arena and also Rec Hall for Penn State wrestling. He will handle in-game updates such as the result of each play, scoring and turnover announcements, and other similar things. Joe Putnam, meanwhile, will handle the public address work when there is a break in the action. He is with the State College Spikes and also calls women’s basketball games on the radio.

“I can’t think of a better person to be teaming up with on this adventure than Rodney Martin,” Putnam told Statecollege.com. “Anyone who has ever been to a Penn State hockey game at Pegula Ice Arena, or a State College Spikes game at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park, knows how Rodney’s distinctive voice can fill an arena or ballpark with energy, and that’s going to be even more evident inside Beaver Stadium.”

Added Martin in an interview with the same outlet:

“Beaver Stadium is such an iconic venue and has seen some incredible moments over the years. To be able to be a part of one of the best atmospheres in college sports is certainly an honor. I am equally excited and nervous to get underway.”

Quote of the day

“I don’t know if I will talk to him, but obviously if he were to reach out I’d answer whatever questions he had or help however I could. But he’s in a good situation. And he seems to be a pretty confident, hard-working kid. I think he’ll be ready for the moment.”
