Penn State hoops set to welcome intriguing Class of ’23 visitor
Penn State has firmed up another visitor to campus as it works to build out its roster. Coming off a Wednesday to Friday trip for Miami transfer Favour Aire, the Nittany Lions will soon welcome a Class of 2023 prospect on Monday.
Bragi Gudmundsson, a 6-foot-5 point guard from Iceland, is set to visit on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday next week. He classifies as a Class of 2023 prospect and is 19 years old.
Gudmundsson currently plays for U.M.F. Grindavik in the Iceland-Subway League. He was credited with averaging 10.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 1.8 assists over 25 games played. The previous year, Gudmundsson was credited with a 10.9 points per game average over 18 games played.
The Iceland-Subway League is considered the highest level of competition in club basketball in Iceland.
Penn State builds a roster
Working to build a roster ahead of the 2023-24 season, Penn State basketball has built brick by brick since the arrival of new head coach Mike Rhoades on March 30. From the re-recruitment of the Nittany Lions with remaining eligibility, to a deep dive into the NCAA transfer portal, the effort has been ceaseless.
Even so, last week marked something of a reset for the program in those efforts. With nine commitments for next season – three returning players and six additions through the transfer portal – outstanding questions were resolved en mass.
On the home front, Penn State saw its Class of 2023 follow Micah Shrewsberry to Notre Dame. All but a formality given the coach’s exit in the cycle, the possibility was put to bed. More relevantly, Evan Mahaffey and Kebba Njie both cemented their decisions to play elsewhere moving forward. Mahaffey announced first, the rangy wing heading to Ohio State, while Njie made his trek to Notre Dame official on Saturday.
In the recruiting space, meanwhile, action has continued for the Nittany Lions. A recent transfer portal miss included Noah Thomasson from Niagara, who chose Georgia on Wednesday this week. And, still searching for potential Class of 2023 contributors, top prospects Blue Cain and Brady Dunlap each ended up choosing other programs.
Offsetting those absences, Penn State picked up a Wednesday commitment from RayQuawndis Mitchell this week. The Lions also earned a Wednesday pledge from Lafayette’s Leo O’Boyle the week prior.
