Penn State hoops lands first portal commitment of 2025 cycle

The Penn State men’s basketball program has landed its first commitment of the 2025 offseason transfer portal cycle. Josh Reed, a 6-foot-7 wing from Cincinnati, has pledged to play his fourth and final season of eligibility with the Nittany Lions according to On3’s national hoops reporter Joe Tipton.

Reed spent the past three seasons with the Bearcats after arriving as an On3 Industry Ranking three-star prospect in the Class of 2022. He was ranked No. 149 nationally, No. 38 among all shooting guards and No. 5 in Georgia for the cycle.

At Cincinnati, Reed gradually developed into an expanding role culminating in a late-season flourish this past year. Finishing the campaign starting nine of the last 10 games, coming off the bench only for senior day, Reed built on his 4.8 points and 2.5 rebounds per game season averages.

Closing out Big 12 play with a two-game appearance in the conference tournament, he averaged 28.8 minutes for the Bearcats, putting up double-figures scoring in five games. He also hit 11 of 28 3-point attempts in the season-closing stretch asd put up a career-high 19 points against Oklahoma State in the Big 12 Tournament.

What it means

The news is a welcome development for head coach Mike Rhoades and the Penn State program.

With five seniors moving on from the roster following the 2024-25 campaign, plus three members of the Nittany Lions’ Class of 2024 hitting the transfer portal, Penn State needs to replenish its ranks for the upcoming season. With Reed’s addition, the program now has nine scholarships accounted for among 15 potential spots on the bench. Last year, the Nittany Lions carried 14 players, including walk-on Joe Sedora, who has since transferred to West Chester.

Somewhat in limbo, Penn State will await definitive word from big man Yanic Konan Niederhauser, who entered his name into the 2025 NBA Draft while maintaining his college eligibility. Konan Niederhauser will participate in the pre-draft process before making a decision to play a final season with the Nittany Lions or pursue the start of his professional career. In his announcement, he said he would not transfer from Penn State should he choose to come back for a final season of college ball.
