Penn State gets versatile safety in Vaboue Toure: Commitment impact

Penn State has picked up another Class of 2024 commitment. Four-star Irvington, N.J., safety Vaboue Toure picked the Lions on Friday. He did so following an official visit to campus last weekend. The 6-foot, 188-pound defender is inside of the On300 and sits at No. 133 overall in On3’s rankings, which call him the nation’s No. 9 safety.

Toure had offers from nearly 30 college football programs. He had official visits scheduled to Oklahoma and Kentucky. But, those are no longer on the schedule. Toure never released a list of finalists before making his decision public. But, he took multiple unofficial visits to Rutgers and Ohio State and also saw Boston College, Notre Dame, and the Sooners once. He took time to visit the Lions three times before his official visit this past weekend.

“What I enjoyed most about the visit was getting to sit down and chop up my film and some game film with Coach Poindexter,” Toure told BWI in January. “One thing that stood out to me was the new weight room, simply because I had never seen it before. It amazed me.”

Penn State has long been amazed by Toure, and vice versa

Penn State offered Toure last March. It quickly became clear that the senior-to-be was a top target for safeties coach and co-defensive coordinator Anthony Poindexter. It’s why the Lions pushed to get him on campus during the second official visit weekend of June. The plan worked, as Penn State locked up a talented and versatile safety who fits their prototypical mold in the mind of BWI film analyst Thomas Frank Carr.

“It’s hard to find an on-field reason that Toure doesn’t fit with Penn State,” Carr writes. “He’s got a great frame, is fast, and has great strengths that are apparent even on highlight film. All indications point towards Toure being able to meet the standard set in the Penn State safety room.”

All told, Penn State lands another versatile, hard-hitting defender to play along the last line of defense in the future.
