Payton Sandfort remains undecided about basketball future

Payton Sandfort remains undecided about basketball future

Once Payton Sandfort entered the NBA Draft following the end of the Iowa basketball season, he knew it would be a process. That process could have a few twists and turns.

“It can be a little stressful,” Sandfort said Thursday following a workout with the Golden State Warriors. “This is a special opportunity and I am trying to just enjoy this process as much as possible. Everyone has been telling me to just keep going to these workouts and then when it comes time for the decision we will come together and the decision for my future.”

Sandfort is coming off a very strong junior season with the Hawkeyes. He averaged 16.4 points and 4.2 rebounds per game this past year while shooting 36.5% from three point range. That led to Sandfort earning third team All Big Ten honors.

They appeal to NBA teams is clearly his ability to shoot the basketball from three point range.

“Everyone has loved the shooting,” he said. “A lot of teams are looking to see other things I do well. I did rebound it well last year, but they want to see how that translates and how physical I am and if I can hold my own defensively.”

On Thursday, Sandfort worked out for the Golden State Warriors. Prior to the NBA Combine, he had a workout with the Atlanta Hawks and the Boston Celtics. Since the Combine, Sandfort has had an interview with the Lakers and a workout with the Clippers. Early next week he will head to Utah for one final workout.

Sandfort was open about the fact that he didn’t have a strong performance at the NBA Combine in Chicago, but he has kept it in perspective.

“The Combine didn’t go the best for me, but from what I have heard the organizations don’t really look at that all that much. The workouts have gone really well and there have been a lot of positive feedback.”

Once the workouts are finished early next week, Sandfort is looking forward to getting back home with his family, who he will lean on heavily as he makes his final decision before the May 29th deadline if he wants to return to Iowa for his senior year.

“I’m going to lean on my family. They are the people I lean on for everything. I will also lean on my agents. The people that I have around me have my best interests, so I know it will be the best decision for me, not just short term, but long term,” Sandfort said.
