Paul Finebaum states Bill Belichick is ‘far more significant’ of a college football hire than Deion Sanders
North Carolina already made the biggest hire of this offseason with Bill Belichick becoming the Tar Heels’ head coach.
On Thursday, Paul Finebaum gave his take on the decision by UNC to hire Belichick while on ‘Get Up’. With that, he thought it was as big of a deal, if not more so, as it’s already been made out to be with what it could mean to collegiate football.
“It’s a seismic moment in the history of college football,” Finebaum stated. “Everything has changed already and Bill Belichick landing in Chapel Hill shatters everything that we knew previously.”
To Finebaum, Belichick in Chapel Hill rivals Deion Sanders being in Boulder with the Colorado Buffaloes as far as spotlight. However, he thinks it could exceed that too as far as Coach Prime considering Belichick’s resumé as a coach as compared to Sanders.
“When you think about the history of college football in recent years, the two biggest hires ten, fifteen years ago were Urban Meyer and, of course, Nick Saban at Alabama. The two biggest hires of the current NIL–transfer portal era? Deion Sanders and now Bill Belichick,” said Finebaum.
“With all due respect to Deion Sanders, this is far more significant because of what he’s done as a head coach,” Finebaum continued. “Deion did all of that as a player – and one of the greatest of all time. Belichick is the greatest NFL coach of all time. You don’t have to tell a 17-year-old who he is. He already knows who he is. Now, as everyone as said, they will want to play for him and they will.”
North Carolina has had decent success as a program and did at times as of late under Mack Brown. Now, under Belichick, Finebaum believes it can get to a championship level there now in the Atlantic Coast Conference and, in turn, the CFP.
“North Carolina was already a good program – not a great program but a program that could get to a championship game, I think, a couple of years ago. Now they can easily, and I mean easily, get to the CFP,” said Finebaum. “This year? We just got through talking about the ACC getting two teams in the playoff. All you need to do is have a good season and maybe get to the championship game. In that league, he can do that.”
There’s still a lot to see in how Belichick shifts to and eventually coaches in college football. Still, if nothing else, his name coming to the sport is significant for both of North Carolina and as part of the NCAA.
