Paul Finebaum explains what Alabama needs to do to be satisfied with Kalen DeBoer’s first season
Alabama already has two losses just over halfway through their debut season under Kalen DeBoer. With that reaping what’s expected from those in Tuscaloosa, Paul Finebaum has assessed where the Crimson Tide go from here.
Finebaum looked at the rest of ‘Bama’s season while on ‘McElroy and Cubelic In The Morning’ on Monday. He started with the shape of the fanbase as he knows that the last three weeks have stunned them, especially after going winless against the state of Tennessee with losses to the Commodores and the Vols.
“I mean, there is a tremendous overreaction going on right now,” said Finebaum. “I’ve been to Alabama. Listen, I don’t want to act like I live there but I was there two days last week and I’ll be there again this week. All this is anecdotal but I feel it’s fairly accurate, in just what I’m hearing, that they’re in a state of shock. Now, they’ll calm down from that.”
Again, although coming off a win over Georgia, Alabama has now lost at Vanderbilt, survived versus South Carolina, and lost to Tennessee in October. With that, College Football Playoff–related plans are presently on pause with what all they need to fix before the end of the regular season.
“Well, I think it’s just not so much the playoffs. I mean that’s stuff we talk about,” said Finebaum. “I think the fanbase could deal with missing the playoffs as long as some of these things that we have discussed can get cleaned up.”
In the end, DeBoer’s first year is now going to be determined by the next two games per Finebaum. With not much else on the schedule in November, Alabama has two games left to make an impression against conference opponents currently in the AP Top-25.
“(The fans) need something to wrap their arms around,” said Finebaum. “The next couple of weeks can give them that.”
“I mean, to think that Alabama has to run the table? They had to do that last year and they did. I’ve seen crazier things from Alabama teams than beating a Missouri team that’s eminently beatable and an LSU team that has some flaws although they’re playing better,” Finebaum said. “So, I mean, that’s really what this season involves. I mean, other than that, I don’t see anything else on the schedule that looks particularly threatening.”
There’s definitely displeasure to a degree so far with DeBoer just seven games into his tenure in T-Town. However, whether it gets better or that much worse comes down to what they do against the Tigers to close this month and to start the next one.
“The next three weeks are going to be whether Alabama survives the season or not and whether fans can feel a little bit better about Kalen DeBoer,” stated Finebaum.
