Pat McAfee recruiting Shannon Sharpe to join him at ESPN
Shannon Sharpe just became sports media’s biggest free agent following his buyout with FS1 and ‘Undisputed’. Now, with him available, one of sports media’s rising stars in Pat McAfee is shooting his shot to get the Hall of Famer to ESPN with him.
McAfee discussed Sharpe in a recent edition of ‘The Pat McAfee Show’ which, notably, is also headed to The Worldwide Leader soon too. He described Sharpe as ‘a narrative shifter’, ‘a weapon’, and ‘a real talent’ with what he has proven as an analyst. From there, McAfee also pitched how fun office life could be if the two sides were to come together.
“Shannon being available? That’s a narrative shifter for a place. That’s a potential massive asset to a platform that maybe wants to launch,” said McAfee. “Shannon is going to be in a really good spot here I think. And I hope to hell he comes to ESPN.”
“And when I say come to ESPN? We’re not even at ESPN. But we’re going to be there. And if Shannon Sharpe is going to be there? And you start talking about like what a day could look like? That’s f***king awesome. And I am very excited about it,” said McAfee.
“Shannon’s a weapon. A real talent. And we’re happy for him,” McAfee said.
Sharpe reached a buyout with FOX Sports earlier this week that effectively ended his seven years on the network with Skip Bayless. The buyout would end his time on ‘Undisputed’ as well as remove his podcast, ‘Club Shay Shay’, from the network’s platforms as well.
There will now be several networks and stages that will be looking to get Sharpe signed and sealed. That group could eventually include ESPN as McAfee seems all aboard on the idea of bringing him on board too.
McAfee says he wants to interview Roger Goodell
During his nascent career as a talk show host and interviewer, former NFL punter Pat McAfee has landed plenty of big interviews, such as his many news-making discussions with New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers. But there’s a big fish he has yet to land.
McAfee would love to sit down and speak with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell on topics far and wide, he told Sports Illustrated’s Jimmy Traina on the ‘SI Media Podcast’. And the former player wants to discuss a lot more than just football.
“So I’ve have questions, obviously, about some of the decisions that he has made that I feel we’re terrible. But I also have a lot of questions about like, how did we get to all these spots? What’s next? Was there any drawback from any owners on any of the decisions that you’ve made that have ended up working out? And did you dunk on their face in the one-per-club meetings? All that type of stuff, I’m very intrigued by,” McAfee said.
Goodell is an easy target as the current NFL commissioner, but McAfee explained how it’s the legacy the league’s chief executive has built that intrigues him.
“His legacy is one that brought the NFL to be the most dominant league in the history of any league, especially in a time where it seems like interest and attention spans are lowering. Their watch-log time and viewers and hours logged and interest year-round is just more than it’s ever been,” McAfee said.
“Because he’s the guy who has been guiding through the most treacherous times, but also most profitable times. So that’s certainly a human I would enjoy kind of having a conversation with, and I think it’ll happen someday,” McAfee said.
