NC State began its summer camp schedule with a morning devoted entirely to specialists. Kickers, punters and long snappers all arrived at the Wolfpack indoor facility Saturday to try and earn a chance to join the program.
TheWolfpacker.com attended the camp and left with some insight into how NC State plans on approaching special teams this cycle.
Another camp for all other positions begins at 4 p.m., so here are a few quick-hitting notes from the first half of today.
There was some positive buzz around Ondre Evans’ recruitment at camp today. Going into his official visits, it sounds like the Wolfpack does indeed lead for the elite four-star cornerback. Michigan made a strong push over the past month, but I get the impression that NC State remains in a good spot. As a reminder, Evans locked in his Wolfpack official visit for June 23-25.
NC State worked out four kickers in the indoor facility towards the end of camp— John Glover from Jacksonville High, Nick Konieczynski from Butler High, Charlie Birtwistle from South Pointe High and Kevin Woody from Charlotte Christian School. Special teams coordinator Todd Goebbel and head coach Dave Doeren were both watching closely.
After speaking with a source, I expect the program to recruit at least Glover and Konieczynski, who both had really impressive days. Whether or not NC State offers takes a specialist on scholarship remains up in the air.
There is a lot of confidence within the program around the current state of the Wolfpack specialists. Preferred walk-on freshman Aiden Arias could be potential successor for Joe Shimko at long snapper, the kicking room is very talented, and NC State feels good about its punting situation as well. Redshirt-freshman Caden Noonkester returns with multiple years of eligibility remaining.
After the camp, Goebbel addressed the athletes in attendance and detailed what he is looking for out of all three position groups. He discussed how, when evaluating kickers, part of what he looks for is the unique sound a ball makes when kicked with power. In my opinion, that was the most prevalent when watching Konieczynski.
A coach from James Madison and a couple other programs were there watching the event today.
The afternoon camp should be exciting. Here are a few prospects I’m interested to see live. ’25 wide receiver Arrion Concepcion’24 offensive lineman Amare’ Grayson (teammates with NC State-commit Jayden Scott)’24 linebacker Curtis Jones (teammates with NC State-commit Cannon Lewis)’24 linebacker Cael Brezina ’24 athlete Armon Wright
