Packed recruiting intel: An update on 4-star WR Jonathan Paylor
Jonathan Paylor’s official visit schedule is set and, with his four scheduled trips approaching quickly, he shared an update on this recruitment with TheWolfpacker.com. The electric four-star receiver spent his winter and spring entirely focused on his track career, so he did not take many visits.
After wrapping up a dominant showing at his conference meet, Paylor talked about the two schools at the top of his recruitment, his track career and more.
The headlining note from my conversation with the Burlington (NC) Cummings High receiver is that South Carolina still leads his recruitment. Head coach Shane Beamer and the Gamecocks’ staff have made him and his father clear priorities, which helped keep the SEC program at the top of his recruitment through the spring. Paylor is trending towards South Carolina, that is clear, but I am holding off on submitting an expert prediction. I get the vibe that official visits could swing his decision, and my expectations are high for the receiver’s June 16-18 trip to campus.
Speaking of officials, Paylor laid out his schedule for June. He will visit Clemson, Maryland, NC State and South Carolina in that order. UNC was notably absent from the list. The receiver did not rule out the possibility of taking more officials later in the year.
Paylor plans on making his decision by the beginning of his senior season. He said NC State remains a close second to South Carolina.
Track and field will play a role in his decision. The two-sport star plans on running track and playing football at the next level. NC State, along with the rest of his top-eight schools, have all offered him the opportunity to compete in both sports. During his track meet Wednesday afternoon, Paylor took home conference titles in the 100-meter dash, the 200-meter dash, the 400-meter dash and the 4×200-meter race.
During his March 24 visit with NC State, he met former Wolfpack star Nyheim Hines, who left a huge impression on the class of 2024 prospect. Hines was a two-sport star in Raleigh and spent some time talking to Paylor about what goes into that. The receiver said it definitely helps to see the Pack has a proven track record developing prospects with his skill set.
When discussing his bond with NC State, Paylor said the staff continues to make him a top priority. Wide receivers coach Joker Phillips has already stopped by Cummings High to evaluate him, and head coach Dave Doeren plans on doing the same. He said he has a “father-son” bond with both Wolfpack coaches. Doeren has visited Paylor’s school more than any other head coach, but Beamer is close behind him.
Paylor talked to freshman wide receiver Kevin Concepcion during his visit and noticed that the first-year pass catcher is already taking on a significant role in the offense. The opportunity to play early is working in NC State’s favor here.
The receiver also has a strong bond with multiple Wolfpack commits. He met and competed against Asaad Brown II during a camp at NC State years ago, and the two highly recruited prospects stayed in-touch ever since. Paylor has also been talking to Cedrick Bailey Jr. and had some great things to say about him as a player during the interview.
Four-star wide receiver Alex Taylor and Paylor talk frequently. The Cummings High star said he is interested in teaming up with the him and four-star wide receiver Terrell Anderson at the collegiate level.
