Packed portal intel: NC State men’s basketball working to capitalize on Final Four run
NC State, fresh off its first Final Four appearance in 41 years, is working to use that momentum in the transfer portal this weekend.
The Wolfpack, which has two open scholarships, will host a key transfer portal recruit as it looks to fill out its roster for the 2024-25 season. NC State already has one transfer committed — Louisville’s Brandon Huntley-Hatfield — and is looking to add to that total this weekend.
Here’s a look at who will be on campus this weekend and what they bring to the table:
Ryan Conwell, Indiana State shooting guard
This is a big visitor for the Wolfpack to have on campus. Indiana State transfer Ryan Conwell will be on campus, becoming the second transfer portal visitor of the year, a source confirmed. NC State was able to land a commitment from Huntley-Hatfield shortly after his visit a couple of weeks ago, and the Pack will likely hope for the same with Conwell.
Conwell, an Indianapolis native, averaged 16.6 points on 48.2% shooting with 5.8 rebounds and 2.5 assists with the Sycamores en route to the NIT title game.
The shooting guard would be a plug-and-play piece in place of DJ Horne, who starred for the Wolfpack this past season. Conwell would provide a high-level scoring threat to NC State’s roster, which needs one after Horne’s eligibility expired at the end of the season.
Before Conwell was a second-team All-Missouri Valley Conference selection this season, he began his collegiate career at South Florida. Conwell played in all 32 games as a freshman with 21 starts en route to 5.1 points, 1.9 rebounds and 1.9 assists in 18.5 minutes a game.
The 6-foot-4, 195-pound scorer is the No. 104 player (No. 18 shooting guard) in the transfer portal, according to the On3 Industry Ranking. Conwell has two years of eligibility remaining.
Who won’t be on campus this weekend: Old Dominion’s Chaunce Jenkins
Old Dominion’s Chaunce Jenkins was reportedly confirmed to visit this weekend, but he will not be on campus. The Newport News, Va., native was planning to visit, and it was locked in for a week, but NC State’s plans changed, per source.
Once Conwell was interested in the Wolfpack, the red and white prioritized the Indiana State transfer, thus passing over Jenkins for the weekend. Jenkins was very interested in NC State, a source said, but is now in a holding pattern with the program.
Jenkins averaged a career-best 15.9 points with 3.8 rebounds and 2.7 assists at ODU this past season.
It is unclear whether or not the Wolfpack will continue to pursue Jenkins moving forward. If Conwell commits to the Pack, it is unlikely that NC State will go after Jenkins with the shooting guard spot then being filled. If he doesn’t, Jenkins’ services could still be a possibility in Raleigh.
Jenkins is the No. 149 overall player (No. 29 shooting guard) in the transfer portal, according to the On3 Industry Ranking. He has one year of eligibility remaining.
