OU week 2 camp report: Freshmen nuggets

OU has wrapped up its first two weeks of preseason camp. There are a lot of storylines to follow among the returners. But one of the fun ones is always about how the true freshmen look.
Here is some insight from coaches and players about what the 2023 class is contributing to Oklahoma and head coach Brent Venables so far.
QB Jackson Arnold
Offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby on Arnold:
“You can just tell there’s a ton of confidence inside of him compared to the first days of spring ball. And that’s just the growth of being able to go through it in the spring and having the summer and getting the install again. We’re back, and he’s created confidence for himself with just how much time he’s spent in that meeting room. So it’s slowing down for him a little bit. He’s got to continue to strain every day to be a heck of a lot better.”
WR Jaquaize Pettaway
Lebby on Pettaway:
“He’s a really strong-bodied kid. So when he’s got the ball in his hands, he kind of turns into a running back, so he’s going to be able to do some good things. The biggest strain for him is, man, knowing what to do all the time when he gets tired and when it’s happening fast and people are yelling, and still be able to go execute. But proud of where he is four days in, and again, we’re going to like him.”
Wide receiver Jalil Farooq on Pettaway:
“I love his speed and his agility. He’s very explosive off the line. He has a lot of twitch. I can’t wait to see him showcase his talent.”
Wide receiver Drake Stoops on Pettaway:
“Just being able to learn fast, being able to learn the scheme fast. Coming in the summer, he only has six months or so to learn, so just being able to learn fast. And then once he learns, just being able to use his speed and skillset to complement him and his route running. And then just learning the plays. He’s been doing a good job it.”
DE P.J. Adebawore
Defensive end Rondell Bothroyd on Adebawore:
“Same as me, kind of. He’s more confident. He’s still obviously a freshman. In the meetings and stuff, he’ll ask questions, which is good. But it’s just like me. He’s just more confident now, so he can play a little faster. And he’s fast as heck too. You guys will see that.”
CB Jacobe Johnson
Cornerback Woodi Washington on Johnson:
“An athletic freak. The guy’s fast. He can jump. He can get in and out of cuts. Once he gets adjusted and learns the defense as well as the guys that know it, then he’ll be a key factor for us.”
CB Jasiah Wagoner
Washington on Wagoner:
“I think Jasiah’s a pit bull. Like, whenever the ball comes his way, he’s going to get it. He’s violent at the point of attack. He’s just a dog. He’s a pit bull. You can see it, not only in practice but in the film room. He’s competing to make sure that when Coach is asking questions, he’s answering it first and just doing things like that.”
