OU baseball’s Dayton Tockey expected to miss regular season

Oklahoma first baseman Dayton Tockey is expected to miss the rest of the regular season after sustaining a hairline fracture in his left ankle during Thursday night’s 8-6 series opening win over Georgia.

A tough blow for the Sooners on the heels of a career night for Tockey in the series opener. He went 4-for-4 with a pair of two-run bombs and career-high five RBIs before exiting the game after sliding into second base in the eighth inning.

Tockey has been a mainstay at first base this season, starting 38 games and slashing .293/.392/.903 with 31 RBIs. His seven home runs rank No. 3 on the team behind Easton Carmichael (10) and Jaxon Willits (9).

The Weatherford Community College transfer has delivered big swings from the left side of the plate during his first season in Norman, most recently hitting a go-ahead late-inning home run in Tuscaloosa and a four-hit performance Thursday in Athens.

While Tockey is expected to miss the remainder of the regular season, OU play-by-play man Toby Rowland said during Friday morning’s pregame show there’s a chance he could return for postseason play.

Who will fill in at first base?

OU coach Skip Johnson has options at first base. Sam Christiansen got the start in game two on Friday in Athens. Easton Carmichael can fill-in as well. Junior Brayden Horton replaced Tockey in the line up Thursday night at first base for the final six outs.

Scott Mudler’s return behind the plate on Tuesday night couldn’t have come at a better time if Oklahoma wants to explore Carmichael playing first base. Mudler had not started a game behind the plate since dislocating his shoulder on March 23.
