Oregon Offers JUCO Athlete De’Gabriel Floyd

Oregon Offers JUCO Athlete De’Gabriel Floyd

There are some journeys in recruiting that have many twists and turns. Not all are as straight-forward as getting an offer, committing and signing.

Former Texas signee and enrollee, linebacker De’Gabriel Floyd, has been the former. His career has seen many twists and turns along the way since raising eyebrows as a senior in high school. Floyd was a highly regarded prep linebacker out of California with a host of national offers. He was considered a top 100 player and a top 10 player from the state he grew up in.

Floyd took few visits and ultimately committed and signed with Texas as part of its 2019 recruiting class. But he never played a down in Austin. Instead his career was cut short with a cervical stenosis diagnosis forcing him to medically retire.

Floyd embarked on a music career following his medical retirement. It never quite took off like he’d hoped.

“Honestly after that I was pretty depressed,” Floyd told ScoopDuck. “It was hard, really hard. I just had to keep going, keep grinding, keep working and I trusted God. I just stayed in my lane, prayed and kept going.”

So now the embattled football star is back on the gridiron, back close to home at East Los Angeles College. And now he’s a part of the 2024 recruiting class and a target of the Ducks. Recently the Ducks offered and now have Floyd’s attention hoping to return to the D-1 level.

“I love this game, I love playing. I was really glad to get that offer from Oregon. I knew coach (Tosh) Lupoi when he recruited me at Bama. He reached out and offered and we’ve stayed in touch since. They really wanted me to come visit this weekend for the Colorado game. But we have a game this weekend and coming off a loss I couldn’t let my team down. But I’ll be up another time.”

Floyd is eligible to graduate in the Winter and embark on his next four year school. Right now Oregon, Charlotte, USF, Utah, Auburn and Ole Miss are showing interest. He’s hoping to visit all of them while other schools continue to become involved.

As for what position he would play, well that remains up in the air for the 6-foot-3, 230-pounder.

“Charlotte likes me at safety and returning kicks. Oregon said they like me as an athlete. USF is recruiting me as a linebacker. I feel like I could be a two-way player. I’m playing both ways now and I think I can keep doing it.”

Floyd said he hopes to hear from more schools as his film circulates and recruitment kicks back up. But he’s also aware if he wants to enroll in December he has a shortened timeline.
