Opposing TGL team trolls Rory McIlroy over blown U.S. Open after missed putt

Rory McIlroy‘s own league is doing him dirty.

McIlroy, who formed TGL alongside Tiger Woods, plays for Boston Common Golf. Boston (McIlroy, Keegan Bradley and Adam Scott) faced off Monday night against New York Golf Club (Cameron Young, Rickie Fowler and Xander Schauffele). Early in the match, McIlroy had a near gimme for par. He missed, sending his putt just left of the cup.

McIlroy’s miss might have brought flashbacks to last June’s U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2. In case it didn’t, New York’s X account is here to remind you.

McIlroy’s latest miss from a few feet within the cup wasn’t great, but pales in comparison to what happened at Pinehurst. McIlroy, who was looking to snap a 10-year major drought, had a two-stroke lead with five holes to play. But he bogeyed three of the last four holes, missing a two-and-a-half-footer for par on the 16th and a putt of three feet, nine inches for par on the 18th. His mistakes opened the door for Bryson DeChambeau, who captured his second U.S. Open championship.

Rory McIlroy’s Boston Common Golf fail to advance to TGL postseason

McIlroy is off to a fast start this season, winning the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am last month. The 35-year-old has been active in TGL, though Boston had a rough go in the regular season. New York picked up a 10-6 victory Monday at the SoFi Center in Palm Beach Gardens, FL, clinching a playoff berth. Boston, meanwhile, went winless in the regular season (0-4-1). The four-team postseason won’t include McIlroy’s Boston team, nor Woods’ Jupiter Links Golf Club.

McIlroy will now turn his attention back to the PGA Tour, where he is set to compete in this week’s Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill in Orlando. McIlroy won the Signature Event in 2018.
