OPINION: How Mario Cristobal brought national relevance to Miami Hurricanes recruiting

Despite being located in one of the deepest high school football talent hotbeds in the country, Miami football recruiting over the last decade had been nowhere near the standard coaches like Howard Schnellenberger, Jimmy Johnson and Butch Davis set for talent acquisition during the Hurricanes’ championship runs in the 1980s, 1990s and early 2000s.

At least, before now third-year head coach Mario Cristobal arrived.

Cristobal, despite mixed on-field results in his first two seasons as Miami’s head coach, has returned the Hurricanes’ recruiting to a consistent level not seen since the early 2000s, when the Canes were a mainstay in the Big East Conference and were a consistent presence in the top five of major polls. The Hurricanes had landed one top-10 recruiting class in the previous decade but have landed consecutive top-10 classes for the first time since 2007 and 2008 over the last two seasons and, on paper, have built a roster many believe can compete for an ACC title and potentially sneak into the expanded 12-team College Football Playoff this fall.

In other words, Miami is finally ready to win now.

The Hurricanes’ talent acquisition has returned to a consistent level that has been largely unseen over the last two decades after Miami hit on big-name prospects like five-star offensive tackle Francis Mauigoa and four-star defensive lineman Rueben Bain in the 2023 class, both of whom were Freshmen All-Americans, and flipped five-star defensive tackle Justin Scott and four-star running back Jordan Lyle from Ohio State in the 2024 cycle. On3 Director of Scouting and Rankings Charles Power noted Miami hasn’t always won these massive recruiting battles in the past and has brought in plenty of talent either ready to contribute as true freshmen or that could develop into high-level players down the road.

“I think Mario Cristobal has added a level of national relevance to recruiting,” Power said. “They’re just much more present in so many of these big recruitments, and they’ve won many, and I expect that to continue.”

Acquiring players like Mauigoa, Scott, Bain and more than 20 other four and five-star players over the last two cycles has been more about a relentless hunger to build a championship-level roster, On3 national recruiting reporters Chad Simmons and Steve Wiltfong said. Cristobal played and served as an assistant coach at Miami, won a national championship as Alabama’s offensive line coach and won a pair of Pac-12 titles as Oregon’s head coach and understands how to win at the top level of college football they said.

And it starts with building a roster capable of meeting Miami’s championship standards.

“Coach Cristobal gets up every day to try to put together a roster that can get Miami back to being the No. 1 college football team in the country,” said Wiltfong, who has covered national recruiting over the last decade. “He pours into high school football recruiting, and they’re now pouring into the transfer portal to try to improve every position room. I think he’s put together a coaching staff that can help Miami get to where they want to go, and now it’s about getting the pieces, the players, that can play at that level.

“I look at the way Miami has recruited, and I think the thing that stands out the most is how they’ve recruited at the point of attack. … From my point of view, I knew Miami was going to recruit at a championship level under Mario because I knew how much energy and passion he has. He loves building relationships. So none of this is a surprise to me.”

Wiltfong said Miami landing Mauigoa in 2023 put the country on notice the Hurricanes were preparing to turn the recruiting tables. Miami flipping Scott from Ohio State a year later only reemphasized that the Hurricanes were here to stay.

In addition to Cristobal and the efforts of Miami’s on-field assistant coaches, Simmons notes he has also seen changes in how off-field recruiting staffers attack both official and unofficial visits. He said the recruiting personnel crew has changed how it builds relationships and makes recruits feel welcome and understands it takes a whole village to recruit at an elite level.

“I think he’s done a great job of putting that personnel staff together, those boots-on-the-ground guys at Miami that are behind the scenes,” Simmons said. “They’ve done a great job with relationships, getting kids on campus, laying out the red carpet and doing a great job with presentation. You can’t do that with just a head coach or just a coaching staff.”

Power thinks there are reasons for optimism in the 2025 cycle, too. The Hurricanes are yet to land a five-star prospect in this class but are a top choice for No. 4 overall recruit DJ Pickett. Power also believes the Hurricanes’ talent evaluation and recruiting thus far in this cycle offer reasons for enthusiasm.

“There’s Luke Nickel, a quarterback that we like at On3,” Power said. “A guy who is just a very steady, sound signal caller. Girard Pringle (at running back) is one as well in addition to Elijah Melendez (at linebacker). I think Miami is going to continue to be in the mix for a lot of top targets on the board still, and I think this is a big season for Miami. It’ll be interesting to see if things fall in their favor in the fall if they can parlay that into momentum on the recruiting trail, because Cristobal has shown that he can land top talent.”

Miami fans should feel okay buying into the hype heading into Cristobal’s third season as the Hurricanes’ head coach, especially after an offseason that featured transfer portal additions like quarterback Cam Ward and running back Damien Martinez. It doesn’t look like Cristobal’s ability to build this season’s roster was a one-hit-wonder by any means. If the Hurricanes win this season the way many believe they will, Miami could be here to stay.
