OPINION: 5 Miami Hurricanes 2024 commits that stood out in the last month

High school football officially kicked off last month, and there was no shortage of highlights from 2024 Miami commits.

Here are five Hurricane commits who stood out to me in the last month:

+ Chance Robinson | 4-star WR | Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) St. Thomas Aquinas | No. 111 national recruit, No. 19 WR | 6-foot-1, 180 pounds | Miami commit

— Robinson looked every bit the part of a blue-chip, top-120 prospect and Miami commit wideout in his season opener last month despite missing much of spring and summer workouts with minor, unconcerning injuries. His stats didn’t jump off the page in St. Thomas’ game against Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco last month, which was by far St. Thomas’ toughest opponent this season, but he consistently gained separation from defenders, controlled his body against smaller defensive backs and placed himself in position to make plays. It’s still early in the season, but Robinson’s development appears right on pace. In the most recent win over Cocoa High he had 9 catches for 148 yards and a TD, and on the season (3 games) he has 14 receptions for 222 yards with three scores.

+ Romanas “OJ” Frederique | 3-star CB | Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) St. Thomas Aquinas | 6-foot-1, 175 pounds | Miami commit
— Frederique looked strong in fall camp and showed no signs of struggling against a new, more talented level of competition after transferring to St. Thomas from Deerfield Beach earlier this year. His length, twitch and physicality helped him aggressively compete in practice against tall, physical receivers like Missouri commit James Madison, a former Georgia and Florida State recruit, and he had an encouraging season-opening performance against St. John Bosco and is playing well. His aggression can make him a bit of an all-or-nothing cornerback at times looking for the big play, which isn’t a horrible trait to have for DBs, but the upside Miami sees in him was very apparent last month. He has 2 PBU in the team’s first three games.

+ Ryan Mack | 3-star CB | Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) St. Thomas Aquinas | 5-foot-11, 170 pounds | Miami commit

— It feels old saying this, but Mack, another St. Thomas product, looked tremendous in August camp and had some massive pass break ups in that big St. John Bosco game to keep it close. Mack showed his well-advanced awareness in zone defenses for his age and why Miami wants him to play nickelback for the Canes next season, which should be the perfect fit for the three-star product given his off-ball coverage skills and his comfortability in the secondary. He has 14 tackles, 5 PBUs and an INT on the young season so far.

+ Joshisa Trader | 4-star WR | Hollywood (Fla.) Chaminade-Madonna | 6-foot-0.5, 175 pounds | Miami commit
— This shouldn’t come as a surprise either, but Trader looked great in fall camp and while he’s been banged up a bit he performed really well before the injury which is why he’s on this list. We’d still like to see him work on his short burst and his ability to gain separation from less-talented defensive backs, but his hands and pass-catching ability rivals anyone in the 2024 class. He has continued to prove why he’s a top-40 overall prospect and why he was such a major Miami priority.

+ Chris Wheatley-Humphrey | 3-star RB | Hollywood (Fla.) South Broward | 5-foot-11.5, 175 pounds | Miami commit

— Wheatley-Humphrey’s video game-like stats helped his recruitment gain traction a year ago, and he’s picked up where he left off to start his senior season. Wheatley-Humphrey has  35 carries, 520 rushing yards, 6 rushing TDs through his first games as South Broward’s do-it-all star playing both ways (210 yards this past week). His wild production as a ball carrier has helped him jump off the page, but don’t be stunned if he ends up playing cornerback at the next level thanks to his length and speed.
