One school has a ‘slight lead’ for 4-star WR Thomas Blackshear
In February, Thomas Blackshear named Florida State, Georgia and Tennessee as his top three schools. Over the last two months, the Seminoles have faded and the Bulldogs and Vols are now battling for four-star wide receiver out of Savannah (Ga.) Calvary Day.
One of the SEC programs has an edge for the No. 307 prospect in the On3 Industry Ranking.
“Georgia has a slight lead over Tennessee,” Blackshear told On3. “Both schools are recruiting me hard and I like a lot of the same things about each school, but Georgia is a little bit ahead of Tennessee.”
When talking about what he likes about each school, Blackshear praised the coaches in Athens and Knoxville, the facilities at each program and the offense both schools run.
Georgia is closer to home, but Tennessee has a former teammate, and both schools will receive an official visit.
“I like Georgia a lot. Their offense spreads things out more now, they are throwing the ball more and I like how they play and practice. Me and Coach [James] Coley are cool and we are getting to know each other well. He is a cool coach.
“Coach [Kelsey] Pope is a coach I like a lot. He is about every little detail. Coach Pope is younger too, and we relate well to each other. I have Merk (Jake Merklinger) up there too. He tells me about Tennessee, how the coaches are real and how much they want me and talk about me up there.”
There was a little chatter behind the scenes that Blackshear could be closing in on a decision, but that is not his plan as of now.
“I will take my official visits first,” Blackshear said. “I have an official visit to Georgia for June 21 and I plan to take one to Tennessee earlier than that in June. Then I will make my decision on where I feel most at home. Where I feel most comfortable is where I will go.”
Florida could be entering the race for Blackshear
Florida State out, Florida in for Blackshear? The Seminoles are no longer on his list, but the Gators are becoming a school to watch.
“I am talking more to Florida now than I have been and I have some interest,” Blackshear said. “They produce outside receivers, they are recruiting me hard and I am probably going to set an official visit up with Florida.
“I have never been there, but I have watched them play and they are recruiting me really hard now. I just need to get down there.”
