On300 Michigan OL commit Blake Frazier on class bond, recruiting top targets, more
Blake Frazier wanted to make his own decision.
As the son of ex-Wolverine Steve Frazier, there was a lot of pressure on the On300 offensive lineman out of Austin (Texas) Vandegrift to follow in his father’s footsteps. Blake, however, wanted to explore all of his options and took closer looks at schools like Clemson, Florida and Texas.
At the end of the day, Blake found his own path to Ann Arbor and gave Michigan a verbal commitment last month.
“I tried to fight it through the process,” Frazier said with a laugh. “I didn’t want it to be just me following my dad to his spot. But when I was on the last visit, my dad wasn’t the focus. It wasn’t ‘this is Steve Frazier’s son.’ It was ‘this is Blake Frazier.’ That was a cool thing for me. I made it my spot over time. I got to make it my school. It’s cool that my dad went there and played there, but Michigan is my school, too. I want to make my own footsteps.”
Michigan offensive line coach Sherrone Moore led the way in the recruitment of Frazier and made him a top priority on his own merit.
Moore recently made a swing though Texas and stopped by to see Frazier at one of his spring practices. The two keep in constant communication and have built a special bond.
“A lot of these schools focus on others when they get guys committed,” Frazier said. “That’s not the case with Coach Moore. We’ve been talking more than ever. He’s involving all of us — me, Ben (Roebuck), Luke (Hamilton), Andrew (Sprague) and Jake (Guarnera) — in the recruiting process. We talk about who we want. But Coach Moore coming out to see me means a lot. It shows he wasn’t putting up a front when he was recruiting me. He really cares.”
Frazier has also built bonds with his future teammates. Michigan has five offensive linemen committed this cycle and all have grown close over the last several months.
“I talk with those guys literally every day,” Frazier said. “We have a group chat, and it’s not always about football. We just talk about everything — how stuff went at school, who we’re recruiting or even making fun of each other. We haven’t known each other all that long, but the bond we have is going to be dangerous once we get on the field together. You have to know your combos and assignments. If you can trust the guy next to you, it’s dangerous for the other team.”
Frazier and company are now focused on adding to a Michigan recruiting class that ranks No. 5 nationally and have their eyes on a handful of key targets.
“I would say Boo Carter and Aaron Scott,” Frazier said. “Those are some guys. Also, Aaron Chiles. We’re looking for Jordan Shipp, too. I think we have a good chance with them. We’re just staying consistent with them. I tell them ‘it’s Michigan.’ It’s hard to explain. Through my recruiting process, I wanted to get that feeling. When you get there, you have a feeling of home. That’s what Michigan is — Michigan is home. You just have to feel it and know.”
Frazier is set to return to Michigan for his official visit on June 16.
At 6-foot-5, 270 pounds, Frazier is ranked as the No. 15 offensive tackle and No. 177 overall prospect nationally, per the On3 Industry Ranking.
