Michigan safeties coach Jay Harbaugh made a swing out West last week and saw Marco Jones at his spring practice.
The On300 2025 linebacker out of Danville (Calif.) San Ramon Valley caught Harbaugh’s attention, got in contact with him over the weekend and notched an offer.
“Getting that offer mean a lot,” Jones said. “Michigan is obviously a prestigious school when it comes to sports and academics. Those are two things I take seriously. They are always one of the top dogs every single year. That’s big. It shows some of my hard work is starting to pay off.”
Harbaugh, who is the area recruiter in Northern California, had a positive first conversation with Jones.
“He came out to my school, and I called him Saturday morning,” Jones said. “He said they were really interested in me and liked where I’m at. He also said they are one of the few schools that recruits around the country. He said they were offering me and see me as a great fit. He seemed like a great guy.”
While Michigan is a new offer, Jones has done his research on the program is impressed with U-M’s NFL production and recent success on the field.
“Obviously, you want to go somewhere where there is a higher probability of you going to the next level,” Jones said. “Michigan is definitely one of those schools. Their success shows how much work they put in off the field because it pays off on the field. Who doesn’t want to win?”
The next step for Jones is making his first ever trip to Ann Arbor for an unofficial visit.
“I would definitely love to get out there when the time works out,” Jones said. “I want to see Michigan and experience it in person. I want to learn more about their academics and support for athletes. I also want to meet the coaches in person and have a tighter bond.”
Along with Michigan, Jones holds offers from Arizona, Cal, Colorado, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Oregon State, Stanford, USC and a handful of others.
At 6-foot-4, 215 pounds, Jones is ranked as the No. 20 linebacker and No. 202 overall prospect nationally, per the On3 Industry Ranking. He is also ranked as the No. 21 overall recruit in the state of California for next cycle.
