On300 edge Iose Epenesa gives Penn State official visit high marks
Edwardsville (Ill.) High On300 edge rusher Iose Epensa took his official visit to Penn State over the weekend.
The blue-chipper was the lone visitor on campus.
“It was great,” Epenesa said. “It was a pleasant surprise.”
The 6-foot-4, 260-pound Epenesa has the Nittany Lions in his Top 10 alongside Oregon, Illinois, Utah, Michigan, Miami, Iowa, Missouri, Kentucky and Texas.
“I didn’t really know much about them before,” Epenesa said. “Then I went on that visit and that taught me a lot about them.”
Epenesa elaborated on that.
“Just the way it’s a family there,” Epenesa said. “You can tell the way they talk to each other. The alumni still there. A lot of coaches and old players and it shows it’s a good program because people want to come back and actually want to coach.”
Epenesa loves the track record in Happy Valley.
“It’s a place I can succeed because of their success with d-ends and d-line throughout the years,” Epenesa said. “They had people drafted and people come through.”
Epenesa took to the culture at Penn State as well.
“Just the family perspective there was awesome,” Epenesa said. “It was really nice facilities and weight room and all.”
Epenesa has been to Miami, Utah, Iowa and others. This was his first time at Penn State.
“They really jumped out of the papers this weekend,” Epenesa said. “I really didn’t know much about them. It was good to learn about them.”
Epenesa’s family enjoyed the trip as well
“It was awesome,” Epenesa’s father Eppy said. “It was unexpected. Some of the stuff we didn’t expect. What we saw and found out about Penn State was pretty cool. Really cool.
“Everybody’s got good facilities and good all that. It’s just the way they handle their stuff up there. It’s pretty neat.”
The elder Epenesa said many of the same things his son said.
“Most of those staff over there are people that played at Penn State,” Eppy said. “All former players. people running recruiting. People running academics. The academic people have been there 27 years. These people have passion because that’s where they went. We look for strength coach and position coach and head coach of course and history of what they do and how long they’ve been there is what parents look. The position coach for Iose if he goes there is a former player too and he played. All that stuff you feel people know what they’re doing and understand their ways. Coach Franklin and his staff welcomed us with such amazing hospitality.
“It was awesome to visit and such a great way to take Iose there to do that. We had a great time. put it that way.”
The On3 Industry ranks Epenesa as the nation’s No. 5 edge and No. 49 prospect overall.
