On300 CB Mason Alexander gives the latest in his recruiting process
Fishers (Ind.) Hamilton Southeastern On300 defensive back Mason Alexander says a few schools are catching his eye heading into the summer.
“Real high obviously on Purdue,” Alexander told On3 following his workout on Wednesday morning. Six Boilermakers coaches were floating around as they recruit Alexander and his teammate, offensive lineman Cameron Gorin.
“Michigan,” Alexander continued regarding programs he’s high on. “Mizzou obviously. Those are the top three right now.”
Alexander quickly added it’s not an official top three. He also has Pittsburgh and Wisconsin in strong contention with plans to official to both in June.
But Purdue looks like they’re setting the tone for the 5-foot-11, 180-pound Alexander.
“Just the culture that they have there,” Alexander said. Defensive coordinator Kevin Kane, safeties coach Grant O’Brien and cornerbacks coach Sam Carter were among the Boilermakers staffers hanging out at the Indianapolis-area high school.
“They’ve been messing me with since day one. Since I got the offer, that’s one squad that hasn’t stopped talking to me. They’re constantly trying to get me down and they don’t do it in an annoying way. They genuinely just want me down to hang with my family, my sister, my mom, all of us.”
Alexander sees tremendous opportunity in West Lafayette.
“I know that’s a place I can go and start off the rip,” he said. “They’re recruiting me as a hybrid, that deep safety they play or the other safety or one of the corners.”
Alexander will take his official to Purdue the second weekend of June. He’s also took a recent visit to Missouri.
“They definitely have the playing style I like,” Alexander said. “They see me as a safety. It would be that safety or nickel fit. I love that because I love the contact.
“I went there a couple weeks go and got to see more than football. I got to see the academic part. That was something my mom really liked when I came home and told her about it.”
A return to Wisconsin is scheduled for the first weekend of June.
“They are a high culture team,” Alexander said. “Going there I know I’ll get good academics and they’ll develop me to be a good football and man.”
Archie Collins has been leading the charge for Pittsburgh in recruiting Alexander.
“All-around good coach and all-around good person,” Alexander said.
As a junior Alexander registered 39 tackles, eight pass breakups and three interceptions playing against the state’s top competition. He ran 10.71 speed in the 100m dash as a sophomore and says he went 10.69 in a dual meet already this year.
If Michigan offers Alexander, they’ll jump to the top with the other programs.
On3 ranks Alexander as the No. 26 cornerback in the country.
