The No. 10 linebacker in the 2024 class announced his Miami offer and set an unofficial visit to Coral Gables in a span of 37 minutes.

Lagrange (Ga.) Troup County linebacker Qua Birdsong has emerged as another one of Miami linebacker coach Derek Nicholson’s recruiting targets, and his message has catapulted the Hurricanes to the top of the 6-foot-2.5, 180-pound linebacker’s radar. Thirty-seven minutes after he announced his offer on Twitter, he announced he’ll take his first unofficial visit to Miami April 6.

“Coach Derek Nicholson called and offered me, and the phone call went very good,” Birdsong said. “Me and coach clicked instantly. His energy was amazing! (He said) ‘WE NEED YOU HERE! COME LEAD THIS DEFENSE!’

“Miami is definitely my top school right now.”

Michigan, Cincinnati and UCF are also in hot pursuit of Birdsong, the No. 136 recruit in the On300, and he puts Michigan and Cincinnati high on his radar as well. But Miami’s history of producing elite linebackers like Ray Lewis and Jonathan Vilma has Birdsong captivated by the Hurricanes as well as Nicholson’s recruiting pitch.

“How early I can make an impact on the field,” Birdsong said when asked what else makes Miami stand out to him. “The most important thing (in my recruitment) is if a coach wants to see me develop off the field, not just on the field, and how I early I can make an impact on the field.”

Georgia Tech is currently listed as the favorite to land Birdsong according to the On3 Recruiting Prediction machine ahead of Cincinnati, Arkansas and Mississippi State. He has taken unofficial visits to Georgia Tech, Arkansas, Ohio State, Florida and Florida State in 2023 and already has an unofficial visit set for Cincinnati June 9.

Birdsong has 20 offers in total including from USC, Notre Dame and Michigan.

CaneSport’s Take

Birdsong draws some parallels to 2023 Miami linebacker recruit Popo Aguirre, another Georgia recruit with massive upside who was high on the Hurricanes.

Miami has been taking it slow in the 2024 recruiting cycle, and it’s hard to tell where specifically Birdsong sits on the Hurricanes’ big board this early into his recruitment, but his talent and upside is hard to overlook. Miami is in great shape with Birdsong if they want to push for him to commit, and he is rewarding the Canes’ interest with an equal amount of attention. His April 6 visit will be one to keep an eye on.
