On3 VP of Recruiting Steve Wiltfong shares latest intel on Michigan’s first wave of official visitors

Michigan is set to host five Top 150 recruits for official visits this weekend.

The highest rated of the group is Las Vegas (Nev.) Bishop Gorman wide receiver Derek Meadows, the No. 37 overall prospect nationally. Notre Dame is considered the heavy favorite, but On3 VP of Recruiting Steve Wiltfong believes there is room for Michigan to improve its stock on the OV.

“I think they are still trying to make up ground there, but he had a really good visit in April,” Wiltfong said. “Being around Coach (Ron) Bellamy and the staff, seeing the culture and why Michigan is so successful, I think it’s enticing. His dad played college football in the state of Michigan. I think they are still making up some ground on some others, but obviously, they’ll have a chance to do more of that this weekend.”

Meadows isn’t the only Bishop Gorman recruit making his way to Ann Arbor this weekend. Elite offensive lineman Douglas Utu, the No. 53 overall prospect nationally, will also be on campus for his OV.

Utu just released a Top 6 of Michigan, Oregon, Washington, Alabama, Nebraska and Tennessee going into the summer.

“That one is kind of tough to put a finger on, but I think Michigan has done an exceptional job with all of those West Coast offensive linemen,” Wiltfong said. “They are in the middle of that one. I wouldn’t be surprised if Michigan ultimately landed him.”

Washington (D.C.) Gonzaga defensive back Kainoa Winston, the No. 96 overall recruit nationally, also released his top schools today, naming Michigan, Oregon, Penn State and North Carolina as his final four.

“I think Michigan is one of the frontrunners there,” WIltfong said. “It’s a big visit this weekend. It could really, really set the tone for him going into the summer. I don’t know who I would mark as the leader.”

Wiltfong also feels optimistic about Michigan’s chances with On300 Danville (Calif.) San Roman Valley EDGE Marco Jones going into the weekend.

“He’s always been excited about Michigan,” Wiltfong said. “He had a really good multi-day visit in the spring and is coming back for his official visit. There is a lot of competition in that recruitment, but he’s a Michigan type kid. He fits in well in that locker room. He’s really excited about the coaching staff and Sherrone Moore.”

Bellville (Texas) High defensive lineman DJ Sanders, the No. 87 prospect nationally, is the fifth visitor on the list for this weekend. Sanders keeps things very close to the vest, but it’s safe to say Texas A&M has the edge with Texas and Michigan also under consideration.

Overall, Michigan is looking to build momentum this weekend as the Wolverines have not landed a commitment in more than a month.
