On3 Scouting Director Charles Power opens up about new Penn State OL commit Eagan Boyer
Penn State’s recruiting efforts along the offensive line took another positive step in the right direction Tuesday when North Carolina native Eagan Boyer committed to the Nittany Lions. His commitment gives the Lions four true offensive linemen in the class, possibly five if in-state athlete Caleb Brewer ends up on offense down the road. As of now, the Wyomissing native is projected to play on defense but could potentially end up at offensive guard depending on how the rest of the class shapes up.
Boyer is the second offensive tackle to commit to Penn State’s class, joining Wisconsin native Garrett Sexton, who committed just a day before Boyer. At 6-foot-8, 260 pounds, there’s no denying that Boyer has the length that Phil Trautwein covets at the position. However, as On3 Director of Scouting Charles Power explained, it’s not just about Boyer’s length.
“Eagan Boyer is a tall, light-footed, pure offensive tackle with developmental upside,” Power said. “The thing that sticks out to me first about Boyer has to be his stature. He looks all of 6-foot-7, 6-foot-8 on film. But at that stature, he really moves well both laterally and into the second level. I think he has very good reactive quickness when you see him move side-to-side on his pass set. He looks like a guy who was playing another position or just had a big growth spurt and is still kind of growing into his body.
Recruiting: Penn State set to host Top 50 prospect this weekend
“Boyer moves like a much smaller player, and I’m really impressed with his agility and overall movement skills. He’s a guy who I think at one point was relatively skinny and has continued to add some good mass. What he showed on film is very encouraging, just with his movement skills and upside in pass protection.”
Playing at Hough High School outside of Charlotte, Boyer is also playing against the very best in the state. Power said that should only help him once he arrives at Penn State.
“He plays high-level high school football at Hough,” Power said. “I believe they’re in the highest classification. I know they play some really, really good teams, so he’s gonna come to college more battle-tested than most typical offensive linemen, which I think is really good as well.”
PSU’s overall efforts up front have impressed
After signing four, four-star offensive linemen in the Class of 2023, Trautwein has stayed hot on the recruiting trail in the 2024 class. Of the four offensive linemen currently committed, Boyer is the only three-star prospect, giving Penn State seven four-star commitments out of their past eight offensive linemen. Boyer also has the upside to potentially move up in the rankings, too, before everything is all said and done come December.
Power said that Trautwein’s efforts and evaluations have impressed him over the past year.
“I think with the way Penn State’s recruiting the offensive line, Boyer is a guy that they can redshirt, probably have him sit and develop, but has a lot of upside down the line. Honestly, I think when you look at what Penn State’s doing on the offensive line, I’m very bullish on Phil Trautwein’s evaluations and the way he’s building that room. I think you could look up in a couple of years and Penn State has a potential Joe Moore award type of offensive line room with a lot of high draft picks in it. They’ve recruited the position really well the last couple of cycles.”
