On3 Roundtable: Texas should reach double-digit wins in 2023

Texas should reach double-digit wins during the 2023 season under Steve Sarkisian, so says Inside Texas’ Bobby Burton. That’s the expectation at least.
With Quinn Ewers back at quarterback, a good recruiting and transfer portal class in and Sarkisian going into Year 3, it’s time to start thinking big. 10 wins sounds pretty good on the surface doesn’t it?
Burton joined J.D. PicKell on the On3 Roundtable and broke down what Texas could do under Sarkisian.
“Oh, I think they need to win 10 this year,” Burton said. “I think it’s possible they only win nine. They went 8-5 last year, a year before it was 5-7. 8-5, Quinn had some growing pains, they lost every single game by one score. No more than one score of those five losses. So J.D. I think 10 is likely, nine would be really low for them.
“Obviously, they only have a 12 game regular season but if you include a Big 12 Championship appearance, that’d be 13 games, along with a possible bowl game that would be 14. I think they they lose no more than four games this year.”
It’s reasonable to expect double digit wins this fall. Sarkisian and Texas should be in the conversation for the Big 12 title and if that’s the case, there’s no reason why the team can’t make the College Football Playoff.
Ewers isn’t the only big name back for Texas. Xavier Worthy is also returning, and one of last year’s top transfers — Isaiah Neyor — is also expected to play a key role after suffering an injury last season.
Add in another transfer portal addition in AD Mitchell and some highly touted recruits such as CJ Baxter, and the Longhorns appear to be in business.
Sarkisian seems higher on this Texas group than his others. The head coach provided an example of the team doing things on their own before a meeting that stood out.
“We’re talented,” Sarkisian said earlier this spring. “I think that we’re together. And that’s, to me, more important than talent. I think that the connectivity on this team, the culture that these guys have created with each other, they have a lot of fun with one another. The first time today, I came into the team meeting, and they were all singing a song together.
“Two years ago, you could have heard a church mouse in here when I walked into a team room. Now they’re actually having a lot of fun being a team with one another and appreciating the work that each of them are doing and that comes from love.”
