On3 Roundtable: Florida State is fired up entering 2023 season

It’s been a long road to the 2023 season for Florida State fans. Now, they just want to enjoy the ride.

With the No. 1 returning production in college football, the Seminole have high hopes for their 2023 campaign. In a recent discussion with On3’s Andy Staples, Warchant’s Ira Schoffel broke down that excitement and, further, why some fans are hesitant to get their hopes up.

“It’s exciting for Florida State fans, for sure,” Schoffel said. “They feel like this is something that they haven’t had in a long time and they know they can lose it. I think for a long time, Florida State fans, like a lot of fan bases, just assumed things are gonna keep rolling.

“But, after you’ve gone through what they went through, toward the end of Jimbo Fisher’s tenure, a really poor two years under Willie Taggart, and then a tough start under Mike Norvell, where he gets hit with a COVID season. That first year, they go 3-6. You start to wonder if it’s ever going to come back again. So, now, here they are.”

Entering his fourth season as FSU head coach, Mike Norvell has transformed the Seminoles into an offensive juggernaut. Norvell’s offenses are averaging 37.7 points per game during his six years as a head coach, which is the third-highest average in the country during that span. Just last season, FSU recorded 62 touchdowns, ranking 16th in the nation.

Florida State is only expected to be better this year. Not only did the program return most its stars, but it added a few, as well. FSU gained six former four-star prospects in the transfer portal this spring while only losing one.

“They bring back almost the entire roster,” Schoffel said. “And, you bring in some high-impact transfers. You might be a top-10 team going into the season. There’s just so much excitement and again, it feels probably more palpable because it’s been a while since they’ve had that.”

A little while is an understatement. The only year the Seminoles made the College Football Playoff was 2014, the first year the format was created. This year, Norvell and Co. will have a chance to restore FSU’s former glory.

The team isn’t waiting to face a challenge. FSU will kick off its season against LSU at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 3.
