On3 No. 6 EDGE Danny Okoye dives deep into recruitment, upcoming Texas visit

It’s very apparent from the first glance why 2024 Tulsa (Okla.) NOAH Homeschool four-star, On3 No. 6 EDGE Danny Okoye has so many college suitors.
He can rush the passer, set the edge, catch passes at receiver and tight end, and if needed, throw a football well over 65 yards. He loves football, being around his teammates, and hopes to move into more of a leadership role in 2023.
The 6-foot-5, 245-pound pass rusher included the Longhorns recently among his top 10 schools. Alabama, LSU, Texas A&M, Colorado, Tennessee, Oregon, Georgia, Nebraska and Oklahoma are the others.
“I recently dropped my top 10 with Texas, OU, Tennessee, Colorado, Georgia, and some others,” Okoye said. “Personally there’s some schools in the top 10 that stands out over others, but I still want to take time, take my officials, and see the schools so I don’t rule out any programs.”
Now, he’s set to see a handful of programs up close and personal, starting with an official visit to Texas.
“I’ve never been to UT before so I’m trying to set the best first impression,” said Okoye. “I mean I’ve always been a Texas fan. I don’t care much for rivalries, I just like football. So it’ll be nice to see what they have to offer.”
He’s connecting with Texas defensive coordinator Pete Kwaitkowski, and hopes to see more of the Longhorn experience.
“He tells me that Texas is different,” Okoye told Inside Texas. “There’s no place like it. So now I’m trying to see if it’s a perfect fit for me. Because all of these schools are great, I don’t think there’s a school in my top 10 I wouldn’t be blessed to go to. But I have to find the place that’s best for me.”
He’ll see LSU and Tennessee before the end of June, then Alabama and Oklahoma in late July, early August. Being strong in the classroom, academics are a big factor for the Okoye family.
“(Academics) are a big deal to me, especially coming from a Nigerian/Jamaican family,” Okoye said. “I’m hoping to study Kinesiology and minor in Business. Hopefully I go to the NFL, but you don’t play forever. So once I get done with that, I’m hoping to become a strength coach or start a personal training business.”
Going the homeschool route for a high school football prospect is a daunting task. After growing up in Chicago, he moved to Oklahoma at the age of nine. He played at Jenks (Okla.) until COVID hit in 2020. After the year of distance learning, his mother decided they could finish the curriculum at home.
What’s a typical day for Okoye?
“Wake up early, work on school, do some calisthenics, and go to my job,” Okoye explained. “I work for eight hours, then I go to the gym. Then grab some food and ahead to practice and workouts. Then go home, do more school work for the or three hours. Then go to bed and do the same thing tomorrow.”
“I’m definitely more of a leader this season,” said Okoye. “Last year, I was only a junior. This year I’m stepping up and taking more of a leadership role. Hopefully helping our team get to where it needs to be.”
Okoye is the No. 169 overall prospect and No. 11 EDGE in the 2024 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He is also the No. 1 player in Oklahoma.
On3 rates Okoye higher than other recruiting services, according to the Industry Comparison. Per the 2024 On300, he is the No. 63 overall prospect and No. 6 EDGE in the country.
