MANHATTAN BEACH, Calif. — One of the country’s top uncommitted safeties has been on planes for three weeks in a row.

On3 Industry Ranking top-75 safety Zaquan Patterson made a seventh visit back to Miami on June 7. He was also at Florida State (June 10) and Ohio State (June 12). The four-star defensive back out of Hollywood (Fla.) Chaminade-Madonna is expected to get back to Michigan on Thursday (June 22).

Patterson’s mother has tagged along for each of his June visits — and that will be the case again in Ann Arbor. The nation’s No. 3-rated safety is gaining some clarity about his future after each trip. He’s now eyeing a decision during his senior season.

“I used to tell people I wanted to wait it out to commit, but it’s gonna be before then,” Patterson told On3. “It’ll probably be mid-season or early in the season. It all depends on how everything works out.”

“If I can go to these schools and my mom feels good here, we’re gonna make that decision,” he continued. “Whenever the time comes around … when she goes ‘I wanna go here’ and more so, whenever my mom and I feel this is the best fit … I want her to decide and we’ll go from there, and it should be out before the middle of the season.”

The Hurricanes got the hometown star on campus and have been a staple in his recruitment throughout the summer. Mario Cristobal is taking a leading role in trying to keep Patterson in South Florida.

“Miami is definitely recruiting me the hardest,” Patterson, the No. 72 overall player in the country, said. “It’s always great there. It was my mom’s first time going to the school and it was surreal for her to witness it. I can’t say anything bad about it; she was so shell-shocked. It definitely changed how I look at these places.”

“Miami contacts her and recruits her and tries to get to the school, and she really likes it,” he added. “She likes Coach Cristobal and Coach (Jahmile) Addae keeps in contact with her and she really likes Miami.

The 6-foot-1, 190-pound Patterson worked out for Mike Norvell and the Florida State coaches this month. The Seminoles’ head coach also left a lasting impression on the top target’s mother.

“Florida State was great,” he started. “She really likes Coach Norvell, so he got a plus for that. She said she loves him and how he’s so crazy and how he’s always screaming. I told her that’s just his personality and I love that about him. And if she’s happy, then I’m happy.”

Ohio State’s Perry Eliano also spent a good amount of time around the On300 defender from Florida during his recent trip back to Columbus. The Buckeyes’ Big Ten-leading 2024 recruiting class includes Patterson’s teammate, Five-Star Plus+ WR Jeremiah Smith.

“With Jeremiah being there,” he started. “Mostly, it’s about talking with Coach Eliano and him telling my mom about how he needs and how he can help me to become a better football player and also a better man. I really appreciate Coach Eliano and Coach (Ryan) Day.”

Patterson heads to Ann Arbor on Thursday (June 22) to reunite with Co-DC coach Steve Clinkscale, whose relationship with the South Florida blue-chipper dates back to his tenure at FIU.

“Coach Clink has made sure to stay on top since he offered me my freshman year at an FIU camp actually,” he said. “He had seen me at the camp and we hit it off, and even though he couldn’t talk to me — once my recruitment opened up on Sept. 1, he was the first number to text me. So yeah, he’s a great coach and we’ve had a great relationship.”

Patterson checks in as the No. 11-rated player out of the Sunshine State in the 2024 recruiting cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.
