Ole Miss trending for four-star point guard Travis Perry

Ole Miss trending for four-star point guard Travis Perry

Lyon County (Ky.) point guard Travis Perry has been a household name for a while now. The 2024 prospect scored 23 points at the Sweet 16 to move past King Kelly Coleman (4,337 points) to become the Kentucky high school basketball all-time scoring leader. The record stood for nearly 70 years. And after checking this box for his high school career, the 6-foot-2, 170 pound recruit is starting to look towards narrowing the scope in his recruitment.

He’s ranked as a four-star in On3’s Industry Rankings. Perry is the 77th overall prospect, the No. 11 point guard in the cycle and the No. 1 overall player in the Bluegrass State. On3’s Jamie Shaw recently spoke with him about his recruitment and the programs standing out for him heading into the summer.

“I took three junior year official visits to PurdueMichigan, and with the Old staff at Ole Miss,” Perry said. “I took a quick official visit to Cincinnati before the period started. Those are the four.”

“I don’t have any visits set up yet,” Perry said. “I’m sure that as these two live periods in July wind down, I’ll start setting some dates. Coach (Chris) Beard has been in contact with Ole Miss recently. I haven’t been face-to-face with him, so I’ll probably take one there. Indiana has been talking about getting one.”

“The campus is beautiful down there. I’m from Western Kentucky, so it’s kind of that southern feel, and that is kind of how Ole Miss is; that small-town vibe,” Perry said. “I like that. Also, talking with Coach (Chris) Beard, he knows what he’s talking about.

“He knows how to win. Talking with him, he thinks I’m a guy who fits well into his system really well and would help them win. He wants to have me down to talk basketball, and that is something I love to do.”

The Rebels have taken over the top spot in Perry’s On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine.

Ole Miss is now holding a 37.2 percent edge over Michigan who is in second at 24.6 percent. And despite an offer from in-state SEC program Kentucky, Western Kentucky (7.5 percent) and Indiana (6.2 percent) are in third and fourth respectively.

On3’s national analyst Jamie Shaw has seen Travis Perry in person and has loved what he’s seen.

“He is a heady, high IQ point guard. Perry has an advanced, fundamental skill base with solid size at 6-foot-2. The junior prospect knows the game, can really shoot the ball, and plays efficiently, within his means on the court.

“I’m really letting the game come to me right now, playing at a great pace,” Perry told On3. “On these circuits, there are so many athletic guys out there. So I’m picking my spots and trying to make the right play every time.”

Shaw asked Perry about his recruitment and what it will be which sets a program apart from everyone else who is recruiting him.

“I don’t really have a specific time frame for anything yet,” Travis Perry said. “I’ll hopefully be able to narrow things down here after these live periods and get on a couple of these visits.

“The big thing for me will be the relationship I have with the coaching staff. It is one thing to go down to a school and have a great visit, but you have to go somewhere you are comfortable. These people are going to be like your second family for a couple of years. Also, I’ll look closely at how I fit on the basketball side. I’ve learned going to these camps all over that system is really big for a player like myself. Going into a system that plays the game the right way is big for me.

“I want to play for a coach who wants to compete and win. I know everyone wants to win, but some guys just really, really have to win. That is big for me also.”
