Oklahoma trending with nation’s top 2025 TE Davon Mitchell, who visits Miami this weekend

Oklahoma trending with nation’s top 2025 TE Davon Mitchell, who visits Miami this weekend

Davon Mitchell is sitting atop many schools’ boards for the 2025 class.

The elite tight end out of Los Alamitos (Calif.) is considering 11 schools — OklahomaTexasTexas A&MGeorgiaAlabamaTennesseePenn StateSouth CarolinaUSCOregon and Ohio State — though one is trending midway through the spring.

The Sooners are on top with Mitchell, a trend that has continued even after the No. 1 tight end in the On300 for 2025 relocated from the Dallas Metroplex out West to Los Angeles.

“It’s still Oklahoma,” Mitchell told On3. “Their communication is good. I know from last year that the tight ends get a good amount of yards and catches, and I think that could be me one day.”

Jeff Lebby leading the charge for Oklahoma

Mitchell’s former prep teammate at Allen (Texas) High School — On3 Industry Ranking four-star QB Michael Hawkins — is set to reveal his college commitment on Saturday. The Sooners are favored on the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine.

Hawkins landing in Norman would only bolster Oklahoma’s chances, Mitchell explained.

“That would help a lot,” he said. “I have a good connection with Mike. We balled out together while we were playing at Allen. They’ve been coming at me with (playing with Mike). That’s been a big part of it for Oklahoma.”

Sooners offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby has led the charge for Allen and likes the elite tight end’s versatility.

“I’d be a good fit for them,” said Mitchell, the No. 31 overall player in the On300. “I can catch, I can block, and that’s something that they really need.”

Mitchell heads to Miami this weekend

Miami did not crack Mitchell’s top 11, which opened the door for first-year Hurricanes tight ends coach Cody Woodiel to touch base with the elite pass-catcher.

Mitchell is expected on Miami’s campus this weekend (April 8).

“It’s my first time visiting,” he said. “I’m just excited to see what they’re all about. I don’t know much about them because we haven’t had time to talk for real, so I’m really looking forward to that. Once they reached out, they told me to come out whenever I had time. Coach (Woodiel) told me I’d be interested in what they’ve got going on, so I’ll go check it out.”

The 6-foot-3, 220-pound Mitchell checks in as the No. 39-ranked player in the country, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.
