Oklahoma softball star Cydney Sanders makes insane catch while falling into dugout
The Oklahoma softball team certainly has a flair for the dramatic, showing that off multiple times in the late stages of an NCAA Super Regional game against Clemson on Saturday.
First the Sooners were down to their final strike, trailing the Tigers 7-4 in the seventh inning. They blasted a three-run homer to tie things up.
Moments later, a stunning defensive play by the Sooners helped send things to extra innings. First baseman Cydney Sanders raced over toward a fly ball headed for the Clemson dugout and made an insane grab. Check it out below.
The ball managed to fall directly between two awnings covering the dugout, and Sanders tracked it all the way there.
Because she was able to keep her feet planted in the dirt, officials ruled her catch valid as she snagged it above her head and crashed head-first into the Clemson dugout, impeded by a pair of Tigers players hanging out at the entrance.
The play went to replay to confirm the catch, which ended Clemson’s side of the seventh inning and sent the game to extras, but it was upheld on review.
But whew has Oklahoma softball had a wild one.
Riding a 47-game winning streak, Oklahoma appeared to be on the verge of its first loss in months, a loss that would force a winner-take-all game in the Norman Super Regional.
Clemson led 7-4 in the top of the seventh inning, with Oklahoma down to its final three outs. Left fielder Rylie Boone got aboard with a leadoff single to left field before center fielder Jayda Coleman flied out for the first out. A fielder’s choice a moment later resulted in the second out for the Tigers.
Designated player Haley Lee singled to put another runner on, bringing the potential tying run to the plate.
Catcher Kinzie Hansen stepped to the plate and battled a bit, going down in the count 0-2. Finally, she made contact and lifted a pitch to left field, where it kept soaring and cleared the fence to tie the game up at 7-7.
Oklahoma softball and Clemson remained tied at seven apiece entering the ninth inning at the time of this writing.
