Oklahoma men’s golf misses cut at nationals to end season

The Oklahoma men’s golf season came to an end Sunday in Scottsdale, Arizona.

The Sooners missed the top 15 cut at the national championships at Grayhawk Golf Club. After 54 holes, Oklahoma shot +27, which ended up being just one stroke too many. Ohio State and Texas Tech tied for 15th at +26. OU came into the event ranked No. 10 in the country.

This is the first time in the last seven years that OU failed to make match play, in which only the top eight teams qualify. Last season, Oklahoma lost in the semifinals of match play and in 2021 it finished runner-up.

Oklahoma’s lineup for the week was redshirt senior Patrick Welch, junior Ben Lorenz, redshirt sophomore Stephen Campbell Jr., sophomore Drew Goodman and true freshman Jase Summy. Goodman and Summy led the way for Oklahoma. Goodman shot four over par and Summy five over par for the three days. The rest of the Sooners struggled, with Welch shooting +17, Lorenz +12, and Campbell +10.

Led by coach Ryan Hybl, OU made its 12th consecutive national championships after finishing second at the Norman regional a week ago. That came after the Sooners won the Big 12 Championship for a second consecutive season. They hoped that momentum would carry over to Arizona as it had in previous years, but a poor first few days left Oklahoma heading home early.

Oklahoma finishes the 2022-23 season with four tournament wins, including the Big 12 Championship. And winning match play events over Texas A&M, Oklahoma State, Kansas, Baylor, and West Virginia.

Oklahoma does return the majority of its top talent in Lorenz, Goodman, Campbell, and Summy. And the Sooners have some young talent on the rise. Meanwhile, Welch finishes his Sooner career as one of the more decorated in program history.
