Oklahoma baseball completes first sweep of Texas since 1998, first all-time in Austin

Oklahoma baseball brought out the brooms this weekend to make history in its rivalry with Texas. After winning 2-1 on Friday, the Sooners followed up with a pair of victories against the Longhorns in Austin on Saturday to complete the 3-0 series sweep behind an impressive effort from their bullpen.

The sweep was not only the first against Texas since 1998, but also the first all-time in Austin. The OU bullpen put in great work across the series to record 11 strikeouts and just one walk while allowing only seven hits over 11.1 innings of work.

The Sooners won the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday 9-6 before taking the second 6-4. Aaron Weber recorded the save as he forced Garret Guillemette to ground out to third. You can view that moment below.

James Hitt got the start at pitcher in the final game of the series and came away with the win. He pitched five innings and struck out three batters before being relieved by Will Carsten. The latter finished with seven strikeouts in 3.2 innings of work.

Oklahoma jumped out to a 5-1 lead after the first two innings and did not trail the entire second game on Saturday. That included a three-RBI home run from Bryce Madron in the second inning. Shortstop Dakota Harris finished the game with a team-high three hits in five at bats.

Braden Carmichael got the start and the win in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader. He pitched five innings to finish with four strikeouts. Carter Campbell finished with the save to record three strikeouts across 3.1 innings.

The Sooners bats were also hot to start the first game, as they jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first three innings. Texas rallied back to make it 8-6 in the sixth inning, but ultimately was unable to overcome the large hole it dug itself early on. Anthony McKenzie finished 3-of-5 at the plate with three RBI to lead the Sooners.

With the sweep of Texas, Oklahoma improved to 22-19 (7-8 Big 12) on the season. Texas, which entered the weekend ranked No. 14 in the country, dropped to 27-15 (8-7).

Next up for the Sooners is a matchup against Oral Roberts as 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in Norman. As for the Longhorns, they’ll face Texas Southern at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
