Ohio State wide receiver Carnell Tate’s mother killed in drive-by shooting

Ohio State freshman wide receiver Carnell Tate‘s mother, Ashley Griggs, was killed in a drive-by shooting in Chicago this weekend.

The harrowing news was reported by ABC 7 Chicago on Sunday, as they explained Griggs was the woman killed in a shooting in the Garfield Park neighborhood of Chicago.

“The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed Sunday that Griggs was the woman killed in a shooting in the Garfield Park neighborhood of Chicago early Sunday morning, according to multiple reports,” wrote Dan Hope of Eleven Warriors. “Per ABC 7 Chicago, four other people were also injured in the shooting, though all of them are in fair condition. A suspect has not yet been identified, but one of the victims told police that the shooter was in a car when they opened fire.

“Griggs was heavily involved in the recruiting process with her son, who grew up in Chicago although he played his final two years of high school football at IMG Academy in Florida.”

Thoughts and prayers, along with messages from teammates and personalities from all throughout the college football world, immediately began rolling in for Tate and his family, as they go through a troubling time.

Carnell Tate is a former four-star recruit out of Chicago, Illinois who played his high school football at the IMG Academy in Florida. As a member of the 2023 recruiting cycle, Tate was the No. 41 overall prospect in the nation, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

“Carnell Tate transferred to IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., before the start of his junior season. He attended Marist High School outside of Chicago as a freshman and sophomore. His sophomore season at Marist was wiped out because of the COVID-19 pandemic,” reads Tate’s On3 player profile. “Tate said the decision to transfer to IMG was made to help him get ready for big-time college football. ‘IMG helps me prepare for the next level faster,’ Tate said. ‘It was a tough decision, but I have no regrets. It was the right decision for me.’

“Tate plans on majoring in business and finance. His father, Sean Tate, went to school at Alabama A&M. His mother is Ashley Griggs. His siblings are Re’asia, Re’niyah, and Akayla. He lists playing video games as his hobby.”
