Ohio State safety target Reggie Powers in constant contact with Buckeyes coaches, commits

COLUMBUS — Ohio State has placed quite an emphasis on in-state recruiting and the 2024 class will have some special Ohioans in it.

Is four-star Dayton (Ohio) Centerville safety Reggie Powers going to be one of those Ohioans?

The No. 12 Ohio prospect holds an offer from the Buckeyes. He has his official visit set for the final weekend in June. And the 6-foot-1, 195-pound prospect has noticed an uptick in communication with Ohio State.

“Me and coach [Perry] Eliano talk pretty much daily,” Powers told Lettermen Row. “We have a great relationship and I’m just fired up to get down there for my official visit.”

Powers earned his Ohio State offer back on March 25 after an extensive evaluation process by the Buckeyes. He camped in Columbus last June and then visited for a game during the regular season. The communication gradually picked up and in March he received his offer.

Now that Powers has that offer, the Buckeyes’ safety options have expanded. Along with that, Powers earns from Ohio State commits just about every single day.

“I hear from both [Deontae and Devontae Armstrong], Jeremiah Smith, Garrett Stover, Mylan Graham,” he said. “All of those guys hit me up and just tell me to be a Buckeye.”

Ohio State only has two defensive commits in its No. 2-ranked 2024 class. Four-star linebackers Garrett Stover and Payton Pierce remain the only two for defensive coordinator Jim Knowles and his staff.

The Buckeyes already have 13 committed prospects and with a defense to fill, this could be the biggest class head coach Ryan Day has brought in.

Before Powers makes any decisions, however, he has some other official visits. He will be at Northwestern this weekend. Then in June, he goes to Pitt, Michigan State and Cincinnati.

All of those schools are the mix for a variety of reasons, but there is a commonality between them.

“The coaches all speak very highly of me and I feel like I should look at them and give it a chance,” Powers said. “I want to make sure everything else is right and I don’t want to rush into a decision.”

His plan is to announce his decision shortly after his official visit to Ohio State and no later than Independence Day.

Lettermen Row already placed a heavy prediction on Powers to the Buckeyes in the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine.

There are a few spots to fill in the Buckeyes’ 2024 defensive class to say the least.

Will Reggie Powers take one of those spots?
