Ohio State commit DeShawn Stewart ‘strong with decision’ after official visit

This weekend kicked off summer official visits for Ohio State, and the Buckeyes hosted 10 total prospects, inclusive of 2 commits and 8 uncommitted prospects.

Included in the former was defensive back DeShawn Stewart out of Wayne (NJ) DePaul Catholic, who committed to Ohio State back on March 31. Stewart was on campus for the spring game in April and made the return trip to Columbus for his official visit once again this weekend.

“It was excellent,” Stewart told Lettermen Row about the visit. “I enjoyed myself from start to finish. I got to hang out with the players and coaches, as well as my fellow commits and recruits. The highlight for me was just spending time with the players and other recruits and creating a bond with them.”

Helping to recruit the eight uncommitted prospects was an advantage of having a current pledge like Stewart on campus for the OSU staff.

“I spent a lot of time with the uncommitted guys,” he shared. “I spoke with Vernell Brown a bunch, and spent time with the other guys, too.”

Stewart also spent plenty of time with the coaches while on campus.

“I spent time with Coach Walt (Tim Walton), Coach G (Matt Guerrieri), Coach (Jim) Knowles, and Coach (Ryan) Day,” he stated. “They spoke to me about how excited they were to have me on board and how I’ll fit into their defense. They said they need somebody to fill the spots of the safeties that are leaving next year. They said I’ll be a safety, but since I play corner in high school, they think that will benefit me because I have the versatility to play two positions.”

Stewart hasn’t flinched since pledging to Ohio State over Penn State, Michigan State, South Carolina, Wisconsin, Pitt, Boston College, Duke, West Virginia, Cincinnati, Syracuse, and others two months ago. That sentiment is only stronger after this latest visit.

“After this visit, I’m strong with my decision,” he said when asked. “It won’t change, I’m sure of that.”

Stewart plans to get back to Ohio State next for a few games in the fall. He’s currently ranked as a 4-star, the No. 248 overall player, No. 27 cornerback, and No. 8 player in New Jersey per the On3 Industry Rankings. On3 ranks him a bit higher at No. 183 overall, the No. 17 cornerback, and No. 5 in the Garden State.
