Offensive coordinator Joey Halzle focused on the details as new look offense has third workout of spring

Tennessee continued their work on the practice field as the Vols put on shoulder pads moving closer full contact work.

For Tennessee offensive coordinator Joey Halzle it’s a transition spring as he moves from quarterback coach to offensive coordinator. But head coach Josh Heupel said the reality is that it’s not really much of a transition.

“Coach Halzle will do a fantastic job,” Heupel said. “He’s been a leader for a long time. He’s been instrumental. We’ve been together 15, 16 years. We work hand-in-hand really well together. We’re able to have easy conversations and have hard ones, too, at the end of the day to find what’s best for us offensively. Players have great trust in him, and the coaches do too. It’s been a really easy transition.”

While the transition for Halzle is easy, his offense is certainly going through a transition with the loss of Hendon Hooker, Darnell Wright, Cedric Tillman and Jalin Hyatt who are all expected to be taken in the first two nights of the NFL Draft the last weekend in April.

Halzle’s message to his offense has been clear — past success doesn’t matter.

“The main thing is that these guys understand that what we were able to accomplish last year doesn’t just happen because you are here and you are the number one offense in the country.,” Halzle said. “You don’t just get to be that next year. Making sure everyone knows the amount of work that went into that and remember the guys who were here that did it. You have to remember what you put in to make that happen and the new guys have to understand that just because you come into this system with this group of guys around you, you don’t just get to do what a Jalin HyattCedric Tillman or a Hendon Hooker did. They put in the work. We have to start back at square one that’s an emphasis this spring.”
