Blue & Gold says (April 7)
Koval is the No. 5 recruit in the country according to ESPN, but her being the only class of 2024 freshman Notre Dame is bringing in makes the decisions of Westbeld and Watson all the more significant. The state of the Fighting Irish front court depends on whether or not those two players are returning. If they are, Notre Dame will be fine in the front court. If they aren’t Ivey will need to hit the portal hard for help at those positions.
Finding a front court player via the portal is something Ivey might elect to do anyway. Koval is immensely talented, yes, but she’s still just a freshman. She’ll be going up against some real basket bruisers this level. There will be a learning curve even for a player of her caliber.
As for potential portal entrants to follow in Bransford’s footsteps, Notre Dame could be safe in that regard. Hidalgo, Miles and Citron are all projected starters. Prosper and Risch should be determined to get back on the floor in a helping capacity after only playing a combined 12 games last season. Put Miles in the same boat as them; she didn’t play at all.
Keep an eye on Marshall. She started in the postseason for Notre Dame with the ACC Tournament injury to Watson. With Koval coming in, Marshall might want to spend her final year of eligiblity somewhere that guarantees her a starting spot. Notre Dame is not that place.
