Notre Dame legacy James Flanigan recaps third South Bend visit; what’s next in his recruitment?

Notre Dame offered Irish legacy James Flanigan back on St. Patrick’s Day, and the four-star class of 2025 prospect has been a regular in South Bend since.
He visited campus eight days after picking up the offer. Flanigan returned for the Blue-Gold Game in April. And his latest visit was for Notre Dame’s “Grill and Chill” recruiting event on Sunday.
It was a unique recruiting visit for Flanigan, as it was more of a party feel than a traditional visit with various meetings.
“It was a lot more getting to meet other recruits and hanging out with them,” Flanigan added. “It was fun. All the games and competitions were enjoyable as well. Seeing [director of recruiting] Chad Bowden’s and [director of high school scouting] Dre Brown’s energy throughout the day was awesome.”
Among the other high school recruits he spent time with was Atlanta Woodward Academy wide receiver Jerome Bettis Jr., another Irish legacy who he met for the first time during the spring game. And Flanigan hung out with a player from his home state as well.
“I met Owen Strebig, who is another recruit from Wisconsin,” Flanigan said. “It was my first time getting to talk to him; we got lunch together.”
Flanigan chatted with some of the Irish assistant coaches as well. He had conversations with quarterbacks coach and area recruiter Gino Guidugli and tight ends coach and offensive coordinator Gerad Parker. He chatted some with head coach Marcus Freeman, too.
The 6-6, 220-pounder even got to talk with defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Al Golden. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see the Irish start to target Flanigan as an “athlete” considering that he can play on both sides of the ball.
“It was good talking with them again,” Flanigan noted.
This past week was a busy one for the Flanigan family, as he also tripped to Stanford, Michigan and Penn State. What’s next in his recruitment after these trips?
“I got around to a bunch of places this week, so that was good,” he said. “The next step for me is to play my high school season and not worry about recruiting too much until after the season, if possible. My top schools I’ve pretty much been to.”
Flanigan will take some game day trips this fall, too.
“Yeah I’ll get to a couple, probably,” said Flanigan. “For Notre Dame, it’ll be the USC or Ohio State game.”
His father, Jim Flanigan, was picked in the third-round of the 1994 NFL Draft after a strong collegiate career at Notre Dame. He spent seven years in Chicago with the Bears as a defensive lineman and was named the 2000 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year.
The younger Flanigan ranks as the No. 200 overall player and No. 7 tight end according to the 2025 On3 Industry Ranking.
