Notre Dame football mid-fall camp 2024 depth chart: Offense

Notre Dame football mid-fall camp 2024 depth chart: Offense

Notre Dame is just over two weeks into fall camp. As of Thursday, Aug. 15, the Fighting Irish have practiced 13 times. The media has been allowed to view at least a part of six of those sessions, including roughly 30 minutes of Thursday morning’s workout.

Here is how Blue & Gold projects Notre Dame’s offensive depth chart 16 days before the season-opener at Texas A&M.

Quarterback

Riley Leonard (Sr.)

Steve Angeli (Jr.)

Kenny Minchey (So.)

CJ Carr (Fr.)

Anthony Rezac (Fr. walk-on)

You can tell in the way they move and you can tell in the way coaches and teammates talk about them. Leonard and Angeli are clearly options No. 1 and 2, respectively. It’s a battle between Minchey and Carr for No. 3, and indications are Carr is close on his counterpart’s heels in that race. Either way, those are two quite good players to have in the third and fourth spots on the depth chart. Rezac isn’t just any walk-on, either.

Paging captain obvious: this is a strong group of Notre Dame quarterbacks.

Running back

Jeremiyah Love (So.)

Jadarian Price (Jr.)

Devyn Ford (Gr.)

Aneyas Williams (Fr.)

Kedren Young (Fr.)

Injured: Gi’Bran Payne (So.)

Love has asserted himself as the No. 1 guy. This does not feel like 1A and 1B anymore. That said, Price is very clearly the No. 2 option. He’ll get his opportunities, especially if Notre Dame employs Love in gadgety situations.

Notre Dame running backs coach Deland McCullough regularly went four deep into the well last year, so Williams and Young are battling for some game-day reps in all likelihood. That is, until Payne, Notre Dame’s No. 1 third-down back in 2023, returns from his knee injury.

Wide receiver (boundary)

Beaux Collins (Sr.)

Jayden Thomas (Sr.)

Deion Colzie (Sr.)

Micah Gilbert (Fr.)

Here’s where you have 1A and 1B. Collins and Thomas will both play and play a lot. They’re way ahead of Gilbert and Colzie, a pair that might both be game ready as well — that’s just how much more polished Collins and Thomas look. But it’s just going to be very difficult for them to get into games with so much competition at this particular wide receiver position.

Wide receiver (field)

Kris Mitchell (Gr.)

Jordan Faison (So.)

KK Smith (So.)

Cam Williams (Fr.)

Notre Dame feels like it has three field receivers who can make things happen in space. The two you’ll probably see the most in games are Mitchell and Faison, who have been splitting first-team reps in fall camp. Smith is a capable player, and Notre Dame offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock has expressed that, but it’s tough to rotate in three guys at one receiver spot.

Wide receiver (slot)

Jaden Greathouse (So.)

Jayden Harrison (Gr.)

Logan Saldate (Fr.)

Faison playing primarily in the field has opened an avenue for Harrison to backup Greathouse up in the slot. Notre Dame has what it believes is one of its very best wideouts in Greathouse and one of its fastest and most experienced in Harrison manning the slot. Good place to be. Saldate is coming on strong for a summer enrollee, but a redshirt season is probably in his immediate future.

Tight end

Mitchell Evans (Sr.)

Cooper Flanagan (So.)

Eli Raridon (Jr.)

Davis Sherwood (Sr.)

Kevin Bauman (Gr.)

Jack Larsen (Fr.)

Evans is the unquestioned alpha. When he sat out a team period that was open to the media on Thursday, it was Flanagan filling in for him. Flanagan and Raridon are just about tied in the pecking order, and Sherwood is the utility guy of the group. The question is can Bauman squeeze out at least a small role coming back from two ACL injuries. A lot of bodies in the room which means Larsen is probably headed for a redshirt season.

Left tackle

Anthonie Knapp (Fr.)

Tosh Baker (Gr.)

Styles Prescod (Fr.)

Out for season: Charles Jagusah (So.)

Jagusah went down with a torn pectoral muscle in the first week of camp and all heck broke loose. Notre Dame offensive line coach Joe Rudolph said Baker was the answer a couple days after the Jagusah news broke. A few days after that, Knapp was getting first-team reps. He got all of the first team looks the media was on hand for Thursday as well. You might be looking at a true freshman left tackle starter for Notre Dame in College Station.

Left guard

Sam Pendleton (So.)

Rocco Spindler (Sr.)

Peter Jones (Fr.)

You might also be looking at a sophomore first-time starter right next to Knapp, too. Even more profound than Knapp usurping Baker is Pendleton playing in front of Spindler and fellow senior Pat Coogan, who started all 13 games for Notre Dame at left guard last year. Spindler started 10. But for two media viewing days in a row, that was the case. So it’s only fair Blue & Gold projects it that way.

Center

Ashton Craig (Jr.)

Pat Coogan (Sr.)

Joe Otting (So.)

It feels like Coogan has more value than as just a backup center, but that’s the role he’s been playing lately. Craig is very set in stone as the starter, and Coogan is undeniably Notre Dame’s next man up in the middle if anything was to happen to him. That plan is in place.

Right guard

Billy Schrauth (Jr.)

Sullivan Absher (So.)

Chris Terek (So.)

Schrauth grabbed ahold of this position in the winter, tightened his grip in the spring and has cemented himself in the fall. He and Craig are the two most stable fixtures of Notre Dame’s offensive line at the moment.

Right tackle

Aamil Wagner (Jr.)

Guerby Lambert (Fr.)

Ty Chan (Jr.)

Wagner has been steady as can be in fall camp, and credit to him with all the chaos that’s taking place on the other side of the line. Credit to Lamber for rising up into the two deep and being ready to step onto the field in a pinch.
